Job Summary

The Corvallis School District is seeking a visionary, collaborative, and student-centered Director to lead our annual K12 musical theater production. This role blends artistic leadership with educational mentorship, guiding a cast and crew of 50+ students through a rigorous and rewarding production process from initial concept and auditions to final performances. The Director will cultivate a rehearsal environment rooted in inclusion, creativity, accountability, and joy, ensuring students of all grade levels feel seen, supported, and challenged to grow both artistically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

Artistic & Creative Leadership

  • Develop and articulate a cohesive artistic vision for the production.
  • In collaboration with the Theater Manager, identify and hire qualified production staff (e.g., music director, choreographer, designers, and technical leads) in alignment with district policies and budget parameters.
  • Work with the Theater Manager to evaluate and select the production title, ensuring artistic merit, educational value, budget feasibility, rights availability, and alignment with district and community standards. Production rights must be secured no later than June 1, 2026.
  • Lead all aspects of staging, blocking, character development, storytelling, and pacing.
  • Guide students in building performance skills, stage presence, and ensemble collaboration.
  • Ensure the production reflects high artistic standards while remaining developmentally appropriate for a K12 ensemble.

Student Experience & Engagement

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and empowering rehearsal environment for students of varying ages, identities, abilities, and experience levels.
  • Model professionalism, empathy, and clear communication.
  • Support positive student behavior and reinforce district expectations for safety and respect.

Auditions & Casting

  • Design and implement an equitable and transparent audition process.
  • Cast thoughtfully with attention to student growth, ensemble balance, and representation.
  • Communicate casting decisions professionally and constructively.

Rehearsal & Production Management

  • Develop and maintain a clear rehearsal and production calendar in collaboration with the production team.
  • Lead organized, purposeful rehearsals that maximize student learning and preparation.
  • Oversee all production elements during technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Promote a culture of safety, timeliness, and celebration throughout tech week and show weekends.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate closely with the music director, choreographer, technical staff, and parent volunteers.
  • Serve as the primary communication liaison for students, families, school staff, and district leadership.
  • Ensure alignment across creative, logistical, and operational areas of the production.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience directing large-scale musical theater productions (50+ participants), preferably in a school or youth setting.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse student groups with clarity, enthusiasm, and emotional intelligence.
  • Strong understanding of musical theater production processes and student actor development. Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during rehearsal and performance periods.
  • Must pass a background check and comply with all district safety, supervision, and conduct policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in education, youth mentorship, or arts education.
  • Experience with culturally responsive directing practices.
  • Foundational knowledge of technical theater (lighting, sound, scenic design, costumes).
  • Experience working within a public school system or contract structure.

Schedule Overview

  • Planning Period: Begins prior to the rehearsal process and includes show selection in Spring of 2026 (if applicable), production meetings, preliminary scheduling, and coordination with district leadership and the creative team. Rehearsal & Performance Engagement: Approximately 8 weeks, with the specific calendar developed collaboratively between the Director and district leadership.
  • Rehearsals typically occur after school on weekdays, with occasional extended rehearsals as performances approach.
  • Performances are generally scheduled across multiple days, often including evening and weekend commitments.
  • The final rehearsal and performance schedule will be determined in partnership to best support student success, production quality, and facility availability. Evening and weekend availability will be required during the rehearsal and performance period.
