The George and Barbara Bush Foundation is a national non-profit providing strategic leadership and philanthropic support to advance the legacy and values of President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush. The Foundation also develops and hosts public programs and events that convene leaders and engage audiences around service, education, and civic engagement.
A Glimpse of the Job
The Director under general direction, maintains responsibility for the management and direction of all strategic communications at the George & Barbara Bush Foundation. This position is the lead for the development and execution of a comprehensive communications strategy for the Foundation. The Director oversees and provides direction for all internal and external communications, brand stewardship, media relations, digital strategy, and executive messaging. The Director oversees all internal and external creative and communications partners.
Essential Duties/Tasks
Leadership and Strategic Planning

Serves as the organization’s brand steward, ensuring that the legacy and values of the foundation and its mission are represented with accuracy, dignity, and consistency across all Foundation communications

Partners with the Executive Team to align communications strategy with organizational priorities, fundraising campaigns, and programmatic events

Establishes and monitors KPIs for communications effectiveness, including media impressions, digital engagement, and campaign performance
Program Development and Content Strategy

Oversees the Foundation’s content strategy across all forms of media, including the website, email communications, social media platforms, donor publications, and annual reports

Leads or directs the creation of multimedia content – including video, photography, and digital graphics that brings the Foundation’s mission to life for various audiences

Develops integrated campaign strategies that support major fundraising initiatives, signature events, and programmatic launches

Identifies and cultivates storytelling opportunities, including beneficiary impact stories, presidential legacy narratives, and donor spotlights that deepen audience connection to the Foundation’s mission
Strategic Resource and Team Management

Directly supervises the Marketing and Communications Manager, providing regular performance feedback, professional development guidance, and clear prioritization support

Builds and maintains a high-performing communications workflows and approval processes for brand compliance

Manages the annual communications and marketing budget with full accountability for variance reporting and cost-effective resource deployment

Evaluates and manages external agencies, freelance, and vendor relationships, including PR firms, design agencies, photographers, and videographers ensuring deliverables meet quality and brand standards
Communications and Public Relations

Effectively engages and communicates with all external partners

Develops press releases and media statements

Prepares executive leadership for interviews and public appearances

Proactively identify earned media opportunities that enhance organizational visibility and credibility

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree required in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a closely related field

At least 10 years of related experience in strategic communications, public relations, or integrated marketing.
Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field

Experience working for a non-profit organization or equivalent mission-driven institution

Experience leading in high profile public relations environments

Experience in advanced writing and communication strategies, and organizational management

Experience with donor communications and development-facing marketing in a nonprofit fundraising context
-
Demonstrated success building or managing a brand identity for a major nonprofit organization.

Experience navigating sensitive or crisis communications situations with discretion and sound judgment.

Proven track record of developing and executing multi-channel communications strategies that drive brand awareness, media coverage, and audience engagement

Experience managing external agencies, creative vendors, and PR firms
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write and edit across a wide range of formats

Strong executive presence and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to advise, influence, and prepare senior leadership for high-stakes public engagements

Demonstrated knowledge of integrated marketing and communications strategy, including brand management, content marketing, media relations, digital channels, and event communications

Ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment with a high degree of independence and sound judgment

30% Expectation of occasional travel to Bryan/College Station, TX and D.C. and other locations.
