Job Description The University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee is seeking a strategic and collaborative Communications and Outreach Specialist to lead communication, change management, and engagement efforts supporting IT services and initiatives across campus. Reporting to the Director of IT Professional Services, this role translates complex technical information into clear, accessible messaging while building strong partnerships and advancing awareness of UWM IT resources.

Key Job Responsibilities

Develop and execute communication and change management plans for IT services, projects, and enhancements

Collaborate with IT teams and campus partners to ensure timely, accurate, and effective messaging

Create and manage content for web, email, social media, print, and campus news channels

Translate complex technical concepts into clear, audience‑focused communications

Maintain and audit website content; ensure alignment with university branding standards

Manage the annual communications calendar and oversee operational messaging deliverables

Analyze engagement metrics (web, email, surveys) to inform strategy and continuous improvement

Design and administer surveys; interpret and share results with project teams

Plan and support outreach activities and campus events (e.g., orientations, awareness campaigns)

Present information to diverse audiences in person and virtually; serve as an ambassador for UWM IT

Develop marketing and informational materials, including brochures and handouts

Support engagement efforts tied to training initiatives and project implementations

Additional Information

This position does not offer visa sponsorship. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.

Selected candidates will be required to complete an I‑9 form to verify eligibility to work in the U.S.

This position offers a hybrid‑flexible schedule, with a minimum expectation of one on‑campus day per week during the initial training and onboarding period to support effective integration and collaboration. As the employee becomes fully established in the role, additional remote work options may be considered based on performance, operational needs, and team alignment.

Minimum Qualifications

Professional experience managing and executing outreach and/or communication plans

Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining web content using a web content management system (e.g., WordPress)

Professional experience editing, reviewing, and/or quality‑assuring written materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, and clarity

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, marketing, information systems, or a related field by the date of hire

Demonstrated experience planning and executing events

Demonstrated experience using email marketing platforms (e.g., Emma)

Experience editing and creating graphics using tools such as Photoshop or InDesign

Demonstrated experience delivering in‑person presentations and/or leading virtual training sessions

Demonstrated experience and/or training in organizational change management

Professional experience managing multiple documentation or training deliverables concurrently, including meeting established timelines and coordinating stakeholder feedback

Experience working in a higher education environment

Target Salary Range $52,000 to $58,000 (Final salary offer will be determined based on knowledge, skills, and experience)
