For more than a century, Missions Inc. Programs has provided compassionate care and life‑changing support to people facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. As a nonprofit with eight distinct programs, we serve over 3,000 individuals annually across multiple sites in Plymouth, St. Paul, Columbia Heights, and St. Louis Park, Minnesota .
Our main campus is located on the north shore of Medicine Lake in Plymouth. It offers a natural, peaceful environment where people can pause, heal, and gain strength for a new beginning.

Founded in 1895, Missions Inc. is a private nonprofit human services and housing organization located in Plymouth, Columbia Heights, St. Louis Park and St. Paul, MN. Missions Inc. provides services for those escaping domestic violence, seeking recovery from problematic substance use, experiencing homelessness, or in need of long‑term skilled nursing care. The Board of Directors oversees both Missions Inc. Programs and Mission Nursing Home, which are incorporated separately but governed by a shared Board and CEO, with established interdependency and intersection in some processes and services.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for individuals who are interested in the human services work of Missions Inc. Programs and Mission Nursing Home. Selected Board Members will be those who are eager to engage with Missions Inc. through regular board meeting attendance, creative idea‑sharing on board committees, and active contributions to a culture of philanthropy. We seek members who:
- Have lived/personal or professional experience with skilled nursing care, substance use disorder, homelessness, domestic violence, or immigrant/refugee related work/experiences.
- Support the fundraising objectives of the organization, either through granting or securing individual gifts and/or creating revenue‑generating relationships with corporations, foundations, or major givers not yet connected to the organization.
- Have specialized experience in finance, fundraising, and/or skilled nursing care.
Board Member Responsibilities & Expectations
- Board Meetings: Prepare for and attend six board meetings per year; average time commitment is approximately 12‑24+ hours annually, depending on committee assignments.
- Committee Meetings: Volunteer for one special committee and attend the committee meetings as scheduled.
- Communications: Help spread the word about Missions Inc’s services, activities, events, and volunteer opportunities by sharing relevant information with personal/professional networks.
- Equity: Govern the organization with an equity lens and be willing to challenge personal biases in order to be better stewards for the organization.
- Fiduciary Oversight: Review annual budgets and periodic financial statements, and make inquiries to ensure that proper financial controls are in place and functioning.
- Philanthropy: Actively participate in fundraising efforts, including events and campaigns, writing thank you notes or calling contributors as requested, and making a personally meaningful annual contribution to the organization.
- Stewardship: Act as a steward of the history, values, and principles of Missions Inc with an understanding and focus on the people we serve, championing the programs, and staying well informed and connected to the organization.
Other Expectations
- Respect the confidentiality of information, including discussions, employee and volunteer information, and other board member information.
- Disclose conflicts of interest and remove oneself from decisions where they exist.
- Attend a minimum of 4 of the 6 annual Board meetings and be present for 1‑2 ad‑hoc meetings annually to discuss specific issues as needed.
- Ability to pass a background check, as required by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid.
