JOB DESCRIPTION: ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
JOB TITLE: Athletic Director
LOCATION: AZ Compass Prep & AZ Compass Elementary (K-12 Campus)
REPORTS TO: Campus Principal
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION The Athletic Director provides visionary leadership and management of the K-12 athletic programs. This role ensures compliance with district, league, and state policies while fostering a safe, inclusive, and competitive environment that promotes student‑athlete development, sportsmanship, and academic success. The Athletic Director collaborates closely with school leadership, staff, students, parents, and community partners to deliver a comprehensive co‑curricular athletic program aligned with the district’s mission and goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES Program Leadership and Compliance
Provide leadership and supervision for all K-12 athletic programs, ensuring adherence to district, league, and state regulations, including eligibility and safety standards.
Oversee coach hiring, evaluation, and professional development to maintain high standards of coaching excellence and student‑athlete welfare.
Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including concussion management, emergency action plans, and risk management procedures.
Promote equity and inclusion in athletics, ensuring equal access and compliance with Title IX and district policies.
Support development and coordination of extended athletic programming (e.g., training, skill development, leagues, and performance programs) that operate outside the traditional school day and enhance the competitiveness and growth of school athletic teams.
Assist in building integrated athletic development pathways connecting school teams with supplemental training opportunities to strengthen student‑athlete performance and program sustainability.
Budget and Resource Management
Develop, manage, and monitor athletic budgets in alignment with program goals and district guidelines.
Oversee fundraising activities, sponsorships, and community partnerships to support athletic programs.
Manage inventory, requisition, storage, and distribution of athletic supplies and equipment.
Scheduling and Facilities Management
Coordinate scheduling of all athletic events, practices, and facility use, including collaboration with community organizations.
Ensure athletic facilities are maintained safely and meet all regulatory standards.
Schedule necessary maintenance and upgrades to support athletic activities.
Student‑Athlete Support and Academic Collaboration
Collaborate with academic staff and counselors to monitor and support student‑athlete academic progress and eligibility.
Encourage student and parent involvement in athletic program development and evaluation.
Communication and Community Engagement
Maintain effective communication with students, parents, staff, and community stakeholders through multiple channels, including social media and district websites.
Serve as liaison with community athletic organizations (e.g., AAU) and promote positive community relations.
Encourage community participation and attendance at athletic events.
Coaching and Teaching Responsibilities
Mentor and support coaching staff in achieving program objectives and professional growth.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, Education, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Valid teaching certificate and relevant coaching certifications.
Experience in athletic administration and coaching at the K‑12 level.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Knowledge of safety protocols, risk management, and compliance requirements.
Ability to foster an inclusive and positive environment for students, staff, and community.
