Job Summary Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead our transition from on‑premise servers to a modern cloud architecture. We are seeking a technical lead to ensure our data systems are secure, optimized, and ready for the future. Please review the Minimum Qualifications for all of the requirements for this position.

Responsibilities

Keep things running: manage our databases daily, ensuring adequate space and correct configuration.

Lead the move to the cloud: help redesign data storage, moving from on‑site setups to modern cloud technologies such as Azure, Google GCP and AWS.

Protect our data: design backup plans and recovery procedures to ensure rapid data restoration.

Improve performance: identify bottlenecks and implement solutions for speed and efficiency.

Draw blueprints: use data modeling tools to create maps that illustrate how our information pieces fit together.

Help the team: mentor IT staff, troubleshoot problems, and train on new database tools.

Stay updated: install the latest updates and patches, and keep learning about new industry trends.

Team You will be joining the IT Division within the Department of County Assets (DCA). Led by IT Manager Michelle Smith, our seasoned team focuses on providing technical support that keeps the county moving. We are currently in the middle of a major shift to modern cloud‑based tools.

Minimum Qualifications / Transferable

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

5 years of experience in IT development and database administration (or 9 years of qualifying training/experience).

Specialized knowledge required – demonstrate skills in the areas listed below.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of Snowflake.

Advanced knowledge of BI data marts, data warehousing, and best practices.

Advanced experience building ETLs for data loading and reporting.

Advanced knowledge of database logging tools (e.g., Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).

Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms (Tableau, Power BI, SSRS).

Advanced knowledge of installing, tuning, securing, and administering on‑prem MS SQL Server and cloud environments.

Working knowledge of SSIS environments.

Working knowledge of Azure AD, Azure tenant ID, and Microsoft Active Directory security.

Knowledge of SQL Server and Azure backup/recovery design and implementation.

Basic knowledge of networking, firewall concepts, and Windows Server administration.

Basic knowledge of SAN/NAS storage management.

Basic knowledge of virtualization (Windows Hyper‑V, VMware).

Basic knowledge of high‑availability technologies.

Application development, architecture, languages, and tools.

Advanced knowledge of RDBMS tools (SQL Server Management Studio).

Knowledge of T-SQL, stored procedures, query plans, functions, views, and indexes.

Knowledge of database modeling, data conversion, and ETL tools (SSIS).

Knowledge of scripting (C#, WMI, PowerShell, RsUtility, MSBuild).

Ability to pass a criminal record check.

Preferred Qualifications

Power BI Server Administration experience.

Assessment of candidates, possibly including training review by a subject matter expert, technical screening interview or exam.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly, AFSCME Local 88 union‑represented position eligible for overtime.

Work location: Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214.

Telework Schedule: routine telework with required attendance at meetings, performance coaching, and other on‑site events.

Work Schedule & Telework

5–8s: 8 hours a day Monday through Friday.

4–10s: 10 hours a day Monday through Thursday.

4–10s: 10 hours a day Tuesday through Friday.

4–9–4: 9 hours a day Monday through Thursday; 4 hours on Friday.

Residency: Must reside in Oregon or Washington.
