About The Affiliated Organization
Health Emergency Initiative (HEI) was founded to ensure that financial barriers do not cost vulnerable Nigerians their lives during medical emergencies. In a context where widespread poverty makes timely access to emergency healthcare unattainable for millions, HEI was established to bridge the gap between poverty and survival—particularly in the critical first hours of an emergency, when relatively modest sums can determine life or death. Road Traffic Accident is currently the biggest killer of young people (0 to 5) in Nigeria. Similarly, recent report from UNICEF states that overs 35% of children of 0 to 5years are malnourished in Nigeria with less than 15% of Nigerians enrolled on health insurance. More scary is that over 133 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor with a projection by PwC that the number would get to 146 million in 2026. HEI's programs are conducted with strong corporate governance built on robust accounting and auditing systems that engenders donor and stakeholders confidence.
HEI supports indigent and vulnerable populations across Nigeria, including accident victims, critically ill patients without immediate support systems, malnourished children in underserved communities, and citizens at risk due to limited access to emergency response services. Its beneficiaries span public hospitals and communities in over 16 states, with particular focus on those living in severe poverty and facing overlapping deprivations. Recent approval by the Federal Government of Nigeria to integrate First Responders training (an initiative championed by HEI) into primary and secondary school curriculum would engender behavioral/system change among the young population, ultimately addressing the root cause of over 40% deaths lost during prehospital emergencies
HEI delivers integrated emergency interventions by: Paying emergency hospital bills and making urgent deposits to enable rapid stabilisation of patients, often acting as next of kin when none is available. Providing lifesaving post-crash care for accident victims. Delivering therapeutic nutrition to malnourished children. Training citizens as CPR- and First Aid–certified first responders through community-based and tech-enabled models. Strengthening community preparedness and response capacity through outreach, partnerships, and emergency health education.
HEI’s work is critical because in Nigeria, survival in emergencies is often determined not by medical complexity, but by poverty and delayed access to care. By removing immediate financial barriers, strengthening pre-hospital response, and building community capacity, HEI saves lives that would otherwise be lost to preventable delays. Its impact—demonstrated by supporting over 50,000 individuals, training 147,500+ first responders, and achieving an 82%+ survival rate among direct beneficiaries—addresses urgent systemic gaps in emergency healthcare and contributes to more equitable, people-centred health outcomes nationwide.
