Senior Tax Associate, State and Local Tax (Income Tax )

Description We are seeking an experienced and motivated State and Local Tax (SALT) Senior Associate with an emphasis in Income Tax to join our growing SALT practice. This role offers the opportunity to work with a collaborative and technically strong team focused on delivering high-quality client service and innovative tax solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare, review, and finalize state and local income, franchise, and gross receipts tax returns for multistate corporate and pass-through entities.

Identify and analyze state filing requirements and nexus exposure, including considerations related to due process and the commerce clause.

Perform business activity tax nexus analyses to determine where income or gross receipts tax filings are required.

Conduct technical state and local tax research using statutes, regulations, and administrative guidance to support tax positions.

Assist with state and local tax audits, including responding to inquiries and supporting documentation requests.

Document technical conclusions, calculations, and research findings in clear, audit-ready workpapers and client deliverables.

Manage assigned SALT workstreams within client engagements, including tracking open items, coordinating data requests, and meeting filing deadlines.

Communicate with clients primarily through phone and email to gather information, clarify tax matters, and deliver updates.

Identify opportunities to improve client service delivery and engagement efficiency.

Participate in internal and external training programs to continuously develop technical tax knowledge.

Handle technically challenging tax projects while ensuring compliance with firm policies and quality control standards.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Bachelor's degree in accounting or tax required.

Master's degree preferred.

Minimum of 3+ years of experience preparing/reviewing multistate income, franchise, and gross receipt tax returns in public accounting for corporate and/or pass-through entities.

CPA, EA, IPT or equivalent certification (can be in process).

Strong relevant tax technical knowledge, including analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.

Strong technical knowledge of state and local income, franchise, and gross receipts taxes for corporate and pass-through entities.

Ability to assess state tax implications across different industries and business structures.

Strong tax research, analytical, and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations.

Excellent technical writing and documentation skills for preparing clear tax memos and workpapers.

Strong project management and deadline management skills in a fast‑paced environment.

High level of attention to detail and accuracy when working with complex tax filings and calculations.

Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with clients and internal teams.

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously.

Proficiency with tax and accounting technologies such as:

Microsoft Office Suite

CCH Axcess Tax

CCH Engagement

Checkpoint or BNA Tax Research tools

AI‑assisted research tools such as CoCounsel

Compensation & Benefits This role offers a competitive base salary along with a comprehensive benefits package. Salary ranges for U.S.-based positions are determined by geographic location and fall into one of three pay zones, which reflect the cost of labor in that area. The anticipated salary ranges for this position are outlined below and are subject to change.

$74,460.00 - $150,402.00
