Job Summary The Director of Dining Services is the strategic business leader of the community’s food and beverage/culinary operation, ensuring resident and client satisfaction by providing a consistently high-quality product and best-in-class hospitality, while also meeting financial goals and driving a positive work environment. The role oversees development and implementation of departmental strategies and implements the Compass Community Living’s service strategy.
Leading Food & Beverage Operation
Develop and implement overall operating strategy aligned with the Compass Community Living and client business strategy.
Take full ownership of driving desired outcomes, holding on-site leadership accountable for service behaviors.
Evaluate personnel, operations, and culinary situations and make appropriate recommendations.
Maintain a professional and positive demeanor; adapt and problem-solve when required.
Perform daily walk-throughs to ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations and Compass Group standards.
Direct safety, sanitation, and maintenance programs.
Ensure ongoing communication in all areas of food and beverage through pre-meal briefings and staff meetings.
Advise executives, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates on relevant information timely by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
Business and Financial Competence
Understand market dynamics, enterprise objectives and business aspects to diagnose strengths and weaknesses, anticipate opportunities and risks, and develop strategies and plans.
Recognize and understand P&L drivers for analysis and evaluation, identifying opportunities, and implementing plans to deliver expected results.
Create overall budget and operate the account in accordance with the approved budget while maximizing client value.
Coach and support team to manage wages, food & beverage cost, and controllable expenses.
Review financial reports and statements to assess account performance against budget.
Work with team to resolve concerns and develop strategies to improve financial performance.
Ensuring Exceptional Customer Service
Understand the client’s business model to prioritize what is most important to residents.
Be visible within the community to build relationships with residents, staff, and other departments as part of the client’s management team.
Review resident satisfaction results and other data to identify improvement areas, share feedback, and take corrective action.
Improve service by communicating and coaching staff to understand resident needs.
Stay aware of market trends and introduce new food & beverage products to exceed expectations and generate revenue.
Empower employees to provide excellent service that exceeds resident and client satisfaction.
Team Building & Management
Lead regular team member meetings.
Create a positive work environment by serving as a role model and motivating staff to deliver hospitality experience.
Set goals including performance, budget, and team objectives.
Solicit employee feedback, apply an open-door policy, and review satisfaction results to address concerns.
Identify developmental needs, coach, and mentor team members to reach full potential.
Cross-train skills, promote professional growth, and develop the entire team.
Find, train, and retain talent using behavioral based interviewing.
Hire food & beverage leadership team members with strong functional expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial leadership.
Ensure fair and equitable treatment of employees.
Lead empathetically while holding accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. Degree in Food Services Technology/Management or related field; or A.A. Degree plus four years of directly related experience preferred.
Five to seven years of direct foodservice operational management experience with inventory and purchasing knowledge and control.
Strong knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation.
Previous P&L accountability or contract-managed service experience desirable.
Strong supervisory, leadership, management, and coaching skills.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to communicate at various levels (management, client, customer, associate).
Excellent financial, budgetary, accounting, and computational skills.
Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office, e-mail, and Internet.
