POSITION DESCRIPTION:
ABIC’s Public Relations Manager is an experienced driver of media engagement across key states and core sectors that underpin the U.S. economy—healthcare, agriculture, construction, hospitality, and manufacturing. The Public Relations Manager is a proactive, creative public relations expert who thrives in a fast-paced, rapid-response environment, excels at pitching and relationship building, and crafts compelling narratives that link policy impact to real-world outcomes. They manage all aspects of ABIC’s PR function, directing national, state, and local media outreach, leading press events and conferences, and overseeing strategic campaigns across diverse audiences.
This role supports the core work of ABIC, including stewardship of the ABIC brand and its sector-focused councils across agriculture, healthcare, construction, Hispanic communities, and food. The position is responsible for coordinating and executing initiatives that serve both the broader ABIC organization and its individual councils.
Key responsibilities include managing and supporting a range of activities such as events, announcements, websites, and social media content that align with ABIC’s overall strategy while also addressing the unique needs of each council. This role requires balancing organization-wide priorities with council-specific efforts, at times operating within the ABIC umbrella and at other times supporting councils as distinct entities.
The position is writing-intensive and requires strong content development skills, including drafting messaging, communications materials, and digital content across platforms. It also involves significant cross-team coordination, working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure alignment and successful execution of initiatives.
In addition, the role will develop and manage sector-focused media relationships, engaging with a range of voices such as social media influencers, traditional press, and industry-specific businesses to amplify ABIC’s visibility and impact across its priority sectors.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Public Relations Management
● Develop and execute comprehensive PR strategies supporting national, state, and local campaigns, policy initiatives, and organizational priorities.
● Drive ABIC’s PR function, including media strategy, event planning, rapid-response communications, and execution of high-profile press conferences and media briefings.
● Lead list-building and media mapping to identify new outlets, beat reporters, podcasts, newsletters, and influencers, nationally and in key markets and/or around key sectors of the economy that align with ABIC’s campaigns.
● Develop, pitch, and place stories by conducting daily media pitching and cultivate and maintain strong relationships with national, state, and local reporters, editors, producers, and influencers across beats and platforms.
● Develop and manage press events and event pitching coordination, sometimes multiple press events a week
● Draft, edit, and refine press releases, advisories, op-eds, talking points, business responses and statements, speeches, media pitches, briefing memos, press event materials, newsletters, and talking points, including rapid-response communications, and coordinate internal approvals under tight deadlines.
● Coordinate and execute press events and on-the-ground activations, preparing and supporting spokespeople (including senior leadership, campaign team staff, key business leaders, and coalition partners) with message guidance, Q&A prep, and real-time coaching for media appearances.
Media Strategy, Storytelling and Engagement
● Sharp news judgment and the creativity to transform data and policy insights into impactful stories that resonate with journalists and audiences in key sectors.
● Conceptualize story ideas based on policy developments, economic data, organizational milestones, and news cycles.
● Translate complex immigration and economic issues into clear, compelling narratives that resonate with journalists, stakeholders, and the public.
● Excel in ideating and amplifying events to integrate press moments within broader campaigns, including live posting, embargoed outreach, follow-up pitches, and clip distribution.
● Plan, manage, and lead press events, briefings, media calls, and virtual or in-person activations, ensuring seamless execution, from logistics and run-of-show to media follow-up and clip distribution.
● Create and manage an editorial calendar to maintain timelines, content calendars, and campaign milestones.
● Collaborate with internal teams (field, policy, development) to align PR efforts with broader campaign goals.
● Manage and coordinate external consultants as needed.
Data and Tracking:
● Develop and implement PR goals and metrics for reach and engagement to evaluate campaign efficacy, refine tactics in real-time to grow online following and impact.
● Conduct background research on reporters, outlets, issues, and policy developments to inform strategy, materials development, and effective platform use.
● Track and report on media coverage, analytics, and campaign performance.
Qualifications
● A deep commitment to advocating for a path to citizenship and comfort and ease advocating for undocumented immigrants.
● Knowledge of and background in immigration issues at national, state, and local levels is preferred but not required.
● A Bachelor's degree is required, with a minimum of 5-7 years experience in communications or PR, including agency experience and issue or political campaigns, with demonstrated success in public policy, industry, or economic media relations.
● Strategic thinker with creativity and initiative to generate new story ideas daily.
● Strong network of media contacts and proven ability to pitch and secure placements in top-tier and trade outlets.
● Proven ability to excel in a fast-paced political environment with an active field component and constituencies, delivering rapid responses to breaking news.
● Experience in coalition-building, cross-team collaboration, and leading press events and media campaigns.
● Comfortable managing multiple campaigns and deadlines while maintaining consistent messaging and high-quality execution.
● Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, an ability to listen to and balance, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
● Ability to work effectively with colleagues coordinating relationship management and events with a broad team.
● Experience with, Google Analytics, LinkedIn, Muckrack, X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social
● Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite, and Asana, or similar platforms.
● Experience with EveryAction or similar systems and the ability to utilize data systems to track performance and engagement.
SALARY RANGE: $95,000-$128,000
