Sales & Use Tax Specialist

The Sales & Use Tax Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and local sales, use, and transactional tax requirements. This role supports accurate tax reporting, filing, and audit defense while partnering with internal stakeholders to interpret tax regulations and minimize risk. Key responsibilities include: Prepare, review, and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions Ensure compliance with applicable state and local tax laws, including rate changes and taxability rules Maintain and update tax determination systems, exemption certificates, and resale documentation Research and interpret sales and use tax regulations and provide guidance to internal teams Support sales and use tax audits by gathering documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and assisting with resolutions Reconcile tax accounts and resolve discrepancies between transactional data and tax filings Collaborate with accounting, finance, AR/AP, and billing teams to ensure accurate tax application Monitor nexus thresholds and assist with new state registrations as needed Identify process improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency and accuracy Qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred 2 to 5 years of experience in sales and use tax compliance or transactional tax Working knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax regulations Experience with tax engines and compliance tools such as Vertex, Avalara, or similar systems preferred Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills High attention to detail with the ability to manage deadlines Proficient in Excel and general accounting systems Preferred skills and attributes include: Experience working in a multi-entity or multi-state environment Exposure to audits and tax controversy support Ability to communicate tax concepts clearly to non-tax stakeholders Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively Work environment: This position is fully onsite and works in a professional office setting. Job type & location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Gulf Breeze, FL. Pay and benefits: The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $31.25/hr.
