
Marine Underwriting Associate

Our Marine team is seeking an Underwriting Associate to join their growing team in the Orange County, CA area. This is a full time, non‑exempt role. This is a hybrid opportunity (2× a week in office, 3× remote).
Position Overview This position serves as an essential member of the Marine Underwriting Associate team by supporting various underwriting functions in partnership with assigned Underwriters and/or territories. Underwriting Associates support new business and renewal activities, manage policy servicing transactions and partner with other support areas such as Billing, Premium Audit, Claims, and Agency Licensing, and respond to agent inquiries. They follow operational workflows and best practices, ensuring service levels are met and providing a positive customer experience to internal and external partners. UAs may also receive cross‑training responsibilities and may have designated underwriting authority.
In This Role, You Will
Support the Underwriter in new business and renewal activities
Prepare accounts by collecting/analysing data and ensuring complete file documentation, instruction, and solicitation
Help support the quoting and issuance cycle
Update work‑management system statuses throughout the policy cycle and monitor work in queue
Document all new and renewal accounts, completing underwriting tools and incorporating information from external resources in accordance with best‑practice guidelines
Complete loss‑control ordering forms at issuance and monitor Task Assistant and monthly reports to advise the Underwriter of report availability
Handle legal notice requests directed by the Underwriter
Partner with Premium Audit and Agency Accounting as needed for audit transactions and overdue premium reconciliation
Consistently execute all UA steps during new business, renewal issuance, and subsequent transactions to achieve quality and service standards
Facilitate transfer of accounts to Process Support for issuance, providing detailed processing instructions and updating appropriate statuses
Use appropriate communication channels to refer or follow‑up with the Underwriter to ensure outstanding items are handled timely
Serve as primary service contact to ensure a superior customer experience; present solutions for rush new business, renewal, and endorsement requests
Respond to account inquiries such as accounting status and billing issues
Manage account information to ensure accuracy of input into all appropriate systems
Demonstrate working knowledge of underwriting systems, workflows, procedures, and compliance rules
Assist with cross‑training of UA teammates
Understand strategy, territory appetite, and key agent partners to achieve growth and profitability goals
Cultivate strong business relationships (internal and external) by proactively communicating and conveying ownership and commitment
What You Need to Apply
Associate’s degree or equivalent experience
1–2+ years of Commercial Lines/Specialty insurance experience
Fundamental underwriting practices, procedures, workflows, systems and tools knowledge
Robust functional knowledge of product offerings and solid business acumen
Strong analytical skills
Strong organizational and time‑management skills
Strong attention to detail and prioritization skills
Ability to work cross‑functionally
