Job Summary
The Manager, Retirement & Pension Benefits, provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Retirement and Pension Benefits function, ensuring effective plan administration, regulatory compliance, financial integrity, and a high‑quality participant experience. This role is accountable for setting direction, establishing controls, developing staff, and ensuring the department consistently meets fiduciary, regulatory, and service expectations in alignment with Board and organizational objectives. Serves as a senior subject‑matter resource and primary liaison with trustees, advisors, auditors, vendors, and regulatory agencies. Job Responsibilities
Provides overall leadership and direction for retirement and pension operations across all assigned locations, ensuring consistent standards, accountability, and service delivery. Establishes departmental priorities, performance expectations, and workflows that align with organizational goals, fiduciary responsibilities, and regulatory requirements. Ensures ongoing compliance with Plan Documents, ERISA, IRS, DOL, PBGC, and other applicable federal and state regulations. Maintains a strong internal control environment and ensures documentation, processes, and records are audit‑ready at all times. Provides oversight of core pension administration activities, including benefit calculations, monthly pension payroll, disbursements, adjustments, and reconciliations. Oversees required participant and governmental reporting, including tax reporting, statements of pension credit, SSA correspondence, and auditor deliverables. Partners with system vendors and internal IT resources to guide system enhancements, data integrity efforts, and reporting capabilities. Serves as a primary point of coordination with plan attorneys, actuaries, consultants, auditors, and third‑party administrators. Provides operational input and review support for Plan Documents, amendments, Summary Plan Descriptions, and Summaries of Material Modifications in collaboration with counsel and consultants. Builds and sustains a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the department. Sets clear expectations for performance, decision‑making authority, and ownership at all levels of the team. Manages performance issues directly and proactively; ensures timely feedback, corrective action, and recognition. Develops succession and continuity plans to protect institutional knowledge and operational stability. Establishes and monitors key performance indicators related to service levels, accuracy, timeliness, workload, and participant experience. Ensures complex participant issues, disputes, or escalations are addressed appropriately, consistently, and in accordance with Plan provisions. Perform other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related field; equivalent work experience will also be considered. Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or managerial experience, with a proven ability to lead multi-state teams. At least 5 years of progressive experience in retirement, pension, or benefits administration. In-depth knowledge of ERISA, IRS regulations, DOL compliance requirements, and other applicable pension laws. Demonstrated proficiency with benefits administration systems, pension software, vendor platforms, and workflow management tools. Strong analytical, mathematical, and financial modeling skills to support accurate pension calculations and reporting. Excellent communication skills, including participant counseling, staff mentoring, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated leadership experience with accountability for staff performance, operational outcomes, and compliance. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with the highest level of professionalism and discretion. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, with a history of process improvement and operational efficiency. Work Authorization
