Tool Designer - Stamping
SUMMARY
Work independently to innovate world‑class designs of new progressive stamping tooling and fixtures while striving for high levels of standardization. This role will also include assisting our technical teams with diagnosing and optimizing existing tooling as well as designing for new construction.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conceptualize, plan and execute the design of progressive and modular stamping tooling.
Analyze product designs for manufacturing feasibility and make improvement recommendations to shorten delivery time, cut costs and improve quality.
Specify purchased tooling components and follow through for timely and accurate delivery (die sets and other tooling components).
Collaborate in a team environment with product designers, process engineers, production personnel, toolmakers, CNC programmers and various vendors to optimize tool design based on team suggestions.
Publish and disseminate models and drawings to management, programmers, toolmakers and other users.
Assist in tracking tool progress in terms of both budget and timing.
Follow and improve established standards and procedures including modeling techniques, file storage procedures and training in accordance with quality procedures.
Assist in developing tooling standards in a team‑based environment.
Participate in tooling design reviews, providing suggestions for improvement where necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but designers work in a team environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum five years of experience progressive stamping tool design and layout.
Functional familiarity with die cast process is desired.
Must understand tooling and manufacturing processes that relate to the industry.
Must have strong general machine tools/tool room equipment skills.
Must have the ability to visualize complex 3‑dimensional geometry and motion.
Must possess creative, innovative mechanical aptitude.
Must have strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Must have strong interpersonal skills.
Must be willing and able to work in a team environment.
Must have strong CAD skills (3‑D tool design in SolidWorks preferred).
Functional familiarity with CAM software is desired.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR QUALITY Associate will provide defect‑free products and services by understanding and meeting the agreed upon requirements of internal and external customers through a process based on prevention and continuous improvement.
