Madison Street Search has partnered with a large, publicly traded organization to identify a Director of Accounting to join their Controllership leadership team. This is a senior accounting executive role with direct visibility to the CFO and senior leadership, serving as the principal accounting executive for a regulated operating company. This person will lead a team of 15+ accounting professionals and play a central role in driving SEC compliance, financial reporting, and process transformation.
Position Overview This role is ideal for a technically strong accounting leader who thrives in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment and brings both deep GAAP and SEC reporting expertise and the executive presence to communicate complex accounting conclusions to non-accounting stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles and financial reporting, including ownership of key financial and operational controls
Serve as a principal accounting executive, including signing off on SEC financial statements and ensuring compliance with GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and applicable regulatory frameworks
Proactively identify, elevate, and resolve accounting and reporting issues to avoid surprises
Partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders and senior leadership to understand business objectives and apply GAAP appropriately
Collaborate with peer accounting leaders to drive consistency in accounting policy, judgment application, and best practices across the Controllership
Lead technology and process modernization efforts tied to recently implemented financial systems, fostering an innovative mindset within the team
Develop and mentor a high‑performing team of 15+ accountants, maintaining a culture of inclusion, integrity, and continuous improvement
Support board‑level materials, white papers, and executive‑level communications
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting
CPA required
16+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 10+ years in a management or leadership capacity
Big 4 public accounting experience with SEC clients strongly preferred
Prior experience within a large, publicly traded company environment with SEC reporting responsibilities
Strong executive presence and sound judgment on complex accounting and SEC matters
Proven ability to lead teams and communicate effectively across all levels of an organization
