Assistant Safety Director

The Assistant Corporate Safety Director supports and helps lead all safety, environmental, health, and DOT compliance programs for three affiliated companies, including one asphalt paving operation and two trucking companies. This role is responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a strong safety culture. This position will report to the Corporate Safety Director.

Experience and Skills: Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Corporate Safety Director will be able to perform the following essential functions under the supervision of the Corporate Safety Director:

Safety & EHS Program Management

Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive EHS programs across all companies

Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for construction and general industry

Conduct jobsite safety audits, facility inspections, and hazard assessments

Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation

Track and analyze safety metrics (TRIR, DART, near misses, etc.)

DOT & Transportation Compliance

Ensure compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations

Oversee driver qualification files, medical certifications, and licensing requirements

Monitor Hours of Service (HOS) compliance

Assist with DOT audits, inspections, and corrective action plans

Manage drug and alcohol testing programs in accordance with DOT requirements

Training & Development

Develop and deliver safety training programs (OSHA 10/30, equipment safety, defensive driving, etc.)

Conduct new hire safety orientations for both construction and trucking personnel

Coordinate ongoing training, certifications, and refresher courses

Promote safety awareness campaigns and behavioral-based safety initiatives

Support environmental programs including stormwater, air quality, and hazardous materials management

Ensure compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and applicable state/local requirements

Assist with permitting, reporting, and environmental inspections

Policy Enforcement & Culture

Enforce company safety policies, procedures, and disciplinary programs

Work closely with operations, dispatch, and field supervisors to ensure safe work practices

Promote a proactive safety culture across all divisions

Participate in safety committee meetings and leadership initiatives

Administrative & Reporting

Maintain accurate safety records, logs, and documentation

Prepare reports for leadership on safety performance and compliance status

Assist with insurance claims, workers’ compensation, and loss control efforts

Support continuous improvement initiatives across all companies

Qualifications Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, or related field preferred

Minimum 5+ years of safety experience in construction and/or trucking industry

Experience with asphalt paving operations and fleet safety strongly preferred

Certifications (Preferred)

OSHA 30 (Construction and/or General Industry)

OSHA 500 (Trainer)

CDS / CDT or equivalent safety credentials

CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CHST preferred

DOT compliance training and experience

Knowledge & Skills

Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and EPA regulations

Experience with safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in outdoor construction environments, including exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise

Ability to travel between job sites, terminals, and company locations

Capable of walking job sites and climbing on/off equipment as needed

Combination of office, field (construction sites), and trucking terminals

Travel required between company locations and job sites

Occasional extended hours based on operational needs
