The Role
Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming and testing the ship’s major mechanical components and systems on commercial or naval ships during construction, overhaul or repair. Examples of components include steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes and diverse support equipment such as laundry, food service and refrigeration. Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments and lathes. Must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S. Must climb ladders and work at extreme heights. Must work in small, tight, or confined spaces. Must kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis. Must lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more. Must reach overhead repeatedly. Must work indoors or outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions. Must work in areas with radiation. Must take and pass a respirator fit test. Must work assigned shift as production needs. Must take and pass a Physical Agility Test. Qualified candidates must have three (3) or more years of experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman or similar experience. Prior mechanical experience such as automotive repair, plant maintenance, machinery installation/repair; successful completion of a technical/vocational program in machining, diesel technology, automotive, HVAC, mechanical.
