OPEN RECRUITMENT
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprising four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of work:
This position will perform plumbing, welding, carpentry, locksmith work, masonry, painting, and/or HVAC at the journeyman level at the Bay Bridge and other facilities as requested. The work is maintenance-based and may require physical exertion outdoors in all weather conditions or indoors in MDOT buildings. Employees may need to lift objects over 50 pounds, work on high poles or elevated locations, and operate in cramped or underground quarters. Other duties may be assigned as required.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist with and perform remodeling, repairs, and fabrication on buildings and offices.
Assist with and perform plumbing repairs and installations in facility buildings.
Fabricate, inspect, and repair metal components to maintain equipment.
Assist with and perform Management of Traffic (MOT) functions.
Employees will report directly to the Skilled Trade Specialist Supervisor. The current vacancy is located at the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge.
Employees in this role are considered essential and may be called in on an emergency basis, 24 hours a day. Rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.

Qualifications Education:
High school graduation or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Minimum three years of skilled trade work in one of the following areas: plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding, depending on the specific duties performed by the position.
All relevant experience, including full/part-time, volunteer, military, or other related work, should be listed on the application.
Additional notes:
Additional work experience in skilled trades may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
A vocational technical school certificate in one or more of the skilled trades may substitute one year of required general experience.
U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in utilities repair or construction/engineering specialty codes may substitute on a year-for-year basis for required experience.
Licenses & Certifications Road vehicle operation is required. Applicants must hold a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator's license and list license number and expiration date on the application. During probation, a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required depending on equipment operated. The agency may also require completion of training and certification programs for permanent status.
Additional Information Must be willing and available for duty at any hour, day, or night as needed to maintain continuous operation and be subject to emergency call‑back requirements. Must maintain reliable communication for emergency purposes. May be required to undergo periodic medical testing and hazardous materials training if exposed to substances such as asbestos, lead‑based paint, or chromium. Ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters is required. Must sign and agree to all Essential Employee policies. Pre‑employment drug testing and substance abuse testing will be conducted in accordance with state regulations.
