Job Description Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two‑year institution with approximately 5,000 students. The Office of Public Safety and Police supports the educational mission by administering security and safety programs that comply with state and federal mandates, and by providing resources to create a safer learning community. The Department of Campus Police is committed to providing public safety services with efficiency, professionalism, and integrity; maintaining a safe, secure environment; protecting college property; enforcing Virginia laws and CVCC rules; and educating the community on emergency preparedness and personal safety.

Responsibilities

Maintain safety and well‑being of students, faculty, staff, customers and visitors by enforcing laws, ordinances and college policy within CVCC jurisdiction.

Preserve peace through high‑visibility patrols, respond to calls for assistance, including emergencies and crisis situations, and provide other safety‑related services.

Patrol assigned area in vehicle and on foot; conduct active campus community problem identification.

Attend campus‑related meetings and maintain high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention.

Perform routine patrols focusing on high‑incident areas, detect possible criminal activities or unmet service needs.

Regularly check college property, facilities and surrounding areas within campus jurisdiction.

Monitor radio broadcasts and other officer activity, ensuring awareness and providing assistance as needed.

Identify, report and respond to suspicious activities or service needs.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned and assist state or agency in emergencies.

Qualifications

At least 21 years of age, currently hold a valid Virginia driver’s license with no major violations.

Current law‑enforcement officer certification or ability to obtain DCJS police officer certification within 12 months of hire.

No criminal record (background investigation).

Certified or able to obtain DCJS Police Officer certification in Virginia; must complete basic police training at a DCJS‑sanctioned academy if not already certified.

Ability to qualify as a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator.

Certification or training in basic first aid, adult and child CPR/AED.

Ability to qualify for use of a firearm and all approved police equipment.

Completion of required ICsn/NIMS trainings.

Working knowledge of law‑enforcement, emergency and safety procedures and familiarity with state/local laws.

Knowledge of CVCC organization, goals and procedures.

Proficiency with PC‑based software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, PowerPoint) for incident reports.

Physically fit and able to meet DCJS training and standards for law‑enforcement officers.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, pleasant disposition, diplomacy, and tact in sensitive situations.

Ability to exercise discretion, write clear reports, and communicate safety information.

Calm and appropriate reaction in emergencies; collaborative with academic departments, support staff and community organizations.

Customer‑service skills, sound judgment, and ability to work independently.

Availability for varied hours, shifts, travel to off‑site centers, and emergency recall.

Ability to work in a multi‑ethnic, multicultural environment and operate college‑motorized vehicles.

Associate’s degree in criminal‑justice or related program (additional consideration).

Additional Considerations

Operation of a state vehicle authorized.

Travel: minimal; may require travel to off‑site centers in Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox and Campbell Counties.
