We are seeking an onsite Drafter/Designer in Houston, TX (with Downhole Heater Systems & Manufacturing Tooling experience) to support detailed CAD modeling, drafting, and documentation for components, assemblies, and manufacturing tooling associated with advanced downhole heater systems. This role works closely with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to create accurate drawings, maintain configuration control, and ensure all technical documentation aligns with engineering requirements, manufacturing needs, and industry standards. This position requires on-site presence.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models for heater system components, assemblies, subassemblies, and manufacturing tooling.
Create and update engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), part lists, and drawing packages for engineering and manufacturing use.
Work closely with Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Product Engineers to convert conceptual designs into production ready drawings and models.
Support the design of tooling, including roll reduction mill components, fixturing, guides, dies, and handling/assembly tools.
Revise and update drawings based on engineering changes, testing feedback, and production requirements.
Ensure all CAD data is properly stored, version controlled and documented within the company’s PLM/PDM system.
Generate assembly diagrams, exploded views, schematics, and visual instructions for use by manufacturing and field operations.
Collaborate with Quality Assurance to ensure drawings reflect correct tolerances and inspection requirements.
Produce customer-facing drawings and documentation packages as required by Sales Engineering or Applications Engineering.
Support prototype builds, ensuring designs align with practical assembly, manufacturability, and machining constraints.
Assist with continuous improvement initiatives, including drawing standardization, revision control improvements, and CAD library maintenance.
Stay updated on best practices in CAD modeling, drafting standards, and manufacturing drawing methodologies.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree or technical diploma in Drafting, Mechanical Design Technology, CAD Technology, or related field. Equivalent experience or CAD certifications will also be considered.
3–7 years of experience as a Mechanical Designer, Drafter, or CAD Technician, preferably in oil & gas, manufacturing, or industrial equipment.
Core Competencies
Strong proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar).
Ability to create complex assemblies and detailed production drawings.
Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerances, and machining considerations.
Experience preparing manufacturing drawings, tooling layouts, and fabrication details.
Knowledge of metal forming, machining, and manufacturing processes is a plus.
Familiarity with BOM creation, configuration management, and drawing revision control.
Strong documentation accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work collaboratively with engineering, quality, and operations teams.
Effective communication skills and the ability to manage multiple drawing packages at once.
