Overview

Reporting to the Director of Quality Assurance/Regional Program Director, the CDL Program Director provides leadership for the CDL Program, serves as the subject matter expert in curriculum development, and participates in revision and implementation processes. The role includes product knowledge training for the Account management group, engagement with potential students, participation in new student orientation, hiring and developing Driver Trainers, convening regular faculty meetings, monitoring the student population, advising students (including during provisional periods and in response to complaints or career-oriented questions), analyzing student data to identify at‑risk students and barriers to success, and driving continuous program improvement and campus effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provides Services to Students
    • Provides academic advising/counseling as needed; makes referrals to outside resources when counseling needs exceed the school’s scope; arranges or provides tutoring when needed.
    • Leads student retention initiatives for students facing barriers to success.
    • Maintains regular contact with all students within the program area; posts office hours; responds to questions and concerns in a timely manner.
    • Refer students to appropriate staff for non‑academic problem resolution.
    • Contacts students who miss days or have excessive absences; maintains records of interactions and correspondence with students.
    • Monitors and reports on communications between Driver Trainers and students; makes periodic calls to ensure follow-up and progress toward returning to or completing the program.
    • Identifies students needing tutoring.
  2. Oversees Status of Quality of Curriculum, Instructional Materials, Equipment, and Facilities
    • Acts as subject matter expert for the program’s curriculum and provides feedback during curriculum development and revision processes.
    • Implements new and revised curriculum; provides weekly recaps of cohort performance.
  3. Oversees Faculty Performance and Development
    • Orients, monitors, supervises, mentors, and assists new Driver Trainers; provides leadership and supports staff and their instructional needs.
    • Attends weekly faculty meetings; communicates trends and changes across departments; maintains a record of professional development activities.
    • Keeps current knowledge of federal/state regulations and accreditation standards related to the program; participates in government and accreditation reporting and ensures timely submission and accuracy.
    • Collaborates with peers to coordinate interdepartmental activities; performs all duties of a full-time Driver Trainer.

Experience and Education Required

  • High school diploma or GED; CDL License.
  • 3 years of experience in academic instruction in a post-secondary environment.
  • 5 years of industry experience in the field of instruction.
  • 2 years in a management or supervisory role; ability to qualify as a CDL Driver/Driver Trainer.
  • Knowledge of faculty development, requirements, delivery methods, and reporting; excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with adult learners; ability to inspire and meet employer expectations; knowledge of industry standards in instruction.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and database programs; ability to develop collaborative relationships and manage programs and policies; strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of federal FMCSA and state DMV standards.

Experience and Education Preferred

  • Associate’s Degree or higher, specialized competency in instruction, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years of instructional experience; 10 years in the field of instruction.
  • Working knowledge of federal/state education regulations; prior experience as an academic program director; experience in student guidance.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility and balance to perform pre/post-trip inspections; ability to climb in/out of cab, bend, kneel, reach, and maneuver equipment.
  • Strength to handle equipment and assist with loading/unloading; endurance for extended driving and instructional periods in varying weather.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT qualifications to hold a CDL, with or without accommodations.

Typical Tasks & Considerations

  • Demonstrating skills: physically showing students how to couple/uncouple trailers, perform inspections, and operate the vehicle.
  • Environmental exposure: training outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
