Director, Portfolio Geoscience
Crescent Energy, houston, tx, United States
Crescent is a differentiated U.S. energy company committed to delivering value through a disciplined, returns‑driven growth strategy and consistent return of capital. Our long‑life, balanced portfolio combines stable cash flows from low‑decline production with a deep, high‑quality development inventory.
Crescent is a top three producer (by gross operated production) in the Eagle Ford basin. Crescent’s leadership is an experienced team of investment, financial and industry professionals that combines proven investment and operating expertise. For more than a decade, Crescent and our predecessors have executed on a consistent strategy focused on cash flow, risk management and returns. Through disciplined and accretive investments, we have successfully tripled the size of our company since going public in December 2021 while maintaining a strong balance sheet.
Crescent Energy is seeking a Director, Portfolio Geoscience to strengthen our subsurface understanding across the portfolio and help identify opportunities to expand running room within our existing assets.
This role will develop Crescent’s independent view of subsurface opportunities across the Lower 48, maintain awareness of competitor activity and emerging play concepts, and apply that insight to improve development outcomes and mature new opportunities inside our portfolio. Working closely with Asset Development, Reservoir, Land, and Corporate Development teams, the Director will help ensure subsurface insight informs decisions early—from acquisitions through development planning and appraisal of new zones. This role will also help translate geological interpretation into structured data and insights that can be integrated into Crescent’s analytics workflows, enabling faster and more consistent evaluation of opportunities across the portfolio. The position reports to the VP, Asset Development and leads a small team of geoscientists supporting portfolio, development, and operations geology activities.
Key Responsibilities

- Maintain an up‑to‑date understanding of subsurface activity, emerging concepts, and development approaches across the Lower 48
- Track competitor activity and translate external learnings into insights relevant to Crescent’s portfolio
- Support Crescent’s acquisition growth strategy by collaborating with evaluation teams
Strengthen portfolio geoscience
- Establish and maintain geoscience standards and interpretation quality across the company
- Compare subsurface opportunities across assets and basins to support informed development and investment decisions
Identify and mature new subsurface opportunities
- Review opportunities within and adjacent to existing development horizons across Crescent’s asset base
- Mature the most compelling opportunities into pilot‑ready concepts that can support disciplined deployment of risked capital
Support acquisitions and post‑acquisition integration
- Lead subsurface due diligence for merger and acquisition opportunities, including evaluation of target assets, reserve assessments, and identification of subsurface risks and upside potential
- Re‑evaluate subsurface assumptions following acquisitions and identify opportunities to improve development plans or expand inventory
Connect geoscience insight to data and analytics
- Translate geological interpretations and subsurface insights into structured, repeatable datasets that can be incorporated into Crescent’s analytics and decision‑support workflows
- Work with technical and analytics teams to ensure subsurface inputs are usable in portfolio analysis, capital planning, and opportunity screening
Apply the right workflows for each stage of development
- Recognize that different stages of the asset lifecycle—early opportunity screening, appraisal, and full‑field development—require different technical approaches and levels of rigor
- Ensure geoscience workflows are appropriately scaled and structured for the decision being made
Lead and integrate the geoscience team
- Lead a team of approximately 5‑6 geoscientists supporting portfolio, development, and operations geology
- Work closely with Asset Development, Reservoir, Land, and Corporate Development teams to ensure subsurface insight is incorporated into decisions early
Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Geology, Geophysics, or related discipline
- ~15+ years of upstream oil and gas experience with significant exposure to unconventional resource development
- Experience working across multiple U.S. basins and comparing opportunities across assets
- Track record of translating subsurface insight into development or appraisal decisions
- Experience working closely with drilling, completions, reservoir, and land teams
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and influence decisions across organizations
- Familiarity with modern data‑driven workflows and the integration of subsurface interpretations into analytics and decision‑support systems
