Overview
Ottumwa, IA – Employment Type: Full-Time. The Director of Laboratory is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of laboratory services. This role ensures high-quality clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and effective team leadership within a hospital or reference laboratory environment. The Director will work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, high-stress healthcare setting and is expected to exercise sound judgment and decisive leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for laboratory services
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards
- Oversee laboratory operations, staffing, workflows, and performance outcomes
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and service quality
- Collaborate with hospital leadership, physicians, and clinical teams
- Manage budgets, resources, and operational planning
- Lead, mentor, and develop laboratory management and staff
Must-Have Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent
- Minimum Education: BA/BS in Medical Technology or a scientific discipline
- Hospital or reference laboratory experience preferred
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisive judgments
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to perform effectively in a stressful healthcare environment
Nice-to-Have / Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree (MBA, MA, or MS in a scientific or related discipline)
- Previous Director-level laboratory leadership experience
