Overview
The Director of Transportation is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the School District pupil transportation program. The Director of Transportation is responsible for training school bus drivers and for maintaining buses and other district vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the safe and efficient transportation of students
- Manage and implement school bus routes to ensure safe and efficient student transportation
- Ensure strict compliance with all federal and state applicable laws governing pupil transportation and vehicle repair
- Administer the Transportation Department budget and maintain necessary records and complete reports as required by law
- Assist in the development of long-range plans, district policy and department guidelines
- Lead the recruitment and training of bus drivers, bus aides and transportation staff in partnership with the district personnel department
- Develop plans and procedures to retain drivers
- Supervise activities of operations responsible for payroll, personnel, field trips and activity trips
- Manage fleet maintenance of all buses
- Assist in developing purchase requirements and specification for new school buses and equipment
- Respond to accidents involving school buses and other department vehicles to ensure proper disposition and protection of district resources
- Report all incidents and accidents to the Superintendent
- Review trends and perform analysis of data to ascertain methods, techniques and procedures to improve transportation operations
- Manage the training of all staff as needed
- Provide leadership to the Transportation Department on day-to-day operations
- Oversee all aspects of the daily bus and bus maintenance operations
- Monitor daily operations to assure that work is performed efficiently and in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Provide lead direction to Transportation Department office and bus staff
- Facilitate staff annual in-service
- Perform road checks during period of inclement weather
- Coordinate with transportation department staff, and administrators on start of school protocols
- Coordinate and provide input in the district transportation services, routing and scheduling
- Coordinate and assist with collision investigations, safety programs, student management, and drug and alcohol testing
- Coordinate with the bus maintenance staff to prepare for annual state bus inspections
- Collaborate with a variety of personnel from other departments, districts, state agencies, and organizations relating to pupil transportation
- Assist and/or coordinate with the development of policies and procedures, system upgrades and implementations, and departmental staffing changes
- Participate on student attendance boundary committee meetings if needed
- Manage bus and other vehicle purchasing plans
- Adhere to all policies of the District
- Perform purchasing duties in compliance with district policy and procedures
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent and other central office administrators, as designated by the Superintendent
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of vehicle maintenance and related safety and legal standards
- Knowledge and skill in the use of materials, tools and methods commonly used in the maintenance and repair of school buses, automotive and other mechanical equipment
- Ability to successfully plan, organize and coordinate the operation of a pupil transportation and vehicle maintenance system
- Ability to operate school bus and district vehicles
- Ability to provide guidance and direction to staff and promote a cohesive team environment
- Ability to use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions
- Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written form with all stakeholders
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
Qualifications
- Commercial Driver\'s License required - or - must be willing to obtain within 90 days
- Administrative or supervisory experience preferred
- Successful completion of all background checks
Contract Days: 240
Salary: Administrative Salary Schedule Range
