Associate Director of Development, Major Gifts
Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, this senior role focuses on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individuals who can make gifts of $250,000 or more, managing regional fundraising efforts in the Bay Area, and collaborating on donor events.
Job Purpose Plan and implement fundraising strategies for a portfolio of donors. Operate independently in assigned regions with responsibilities for prospect identification, solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities. Work with staff, donors, volunteers, faculty, and university staff to maintain relationships with all constituencies. Collaborate with faculty and leaders to create and execute regional donor events.
Core Duties
Develop solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies for development projects and/or specific donor populations or geographic regions.
Manage an active portfolio, track solicitation assignments and progress. Conduct 12‑15 visits per month and spend about 50% of time on the road.
Maintain an active list of contacts, identify new prospective donors, steward volunteers, coordinate volunteer fundraising efforts, and manage major‑gift cultivation and solicitation events.
Stay informed on current university and law school initiatives and activities.
Serve as expert partner between faculty‑led programs and the Office of External Relations.
Staff the dean and faculty for visits with potential funders, preparing briefings, developing cultivation strategies, and coordinating follow‑up.
Build relationships to secure gifts of $250,000+.
Establish and enhance ongoing relationships with alumni and friends through visits, calls, and meaningful contacts.
Prioritize prospects, prepare background information, assign volunteers, and follow up to ensure solicitation completion.
Work closely with development colleagues to align program goals with overall giving goals.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or equivalent education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Effective prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
Experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
Superior written and oral communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support.
Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
Working Conditions
May require flexible hours, including nights and weekends; regular travel will be required.
