Position Summary Information Job Description Summary: The FYE Student Ambassador will support the Office of First Year Experience by performing basic administrative tasks and serving as a resource for new students. Responsibilities include assisting with New Student Orientations, hosting student-led events, answering questions about SMC, and helping students navigate campus resources and services.
Required Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of SMC, campus, and available resources
High school diploma or GED
Ability to work in a team setting
Positive attitude and enthusiasm
Good time management and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Google Suite, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word and Canva
Basic clerical skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Greet walk‑ins and explain basic information about First Year Experience and how students can utilize the tools offered in the office
Check in students who are attending FYE programs and workshops
Plan, promote, and implement one FYE event each Fall and Spring semester
Use Salesforce to identify students, determine majors, and direct to appropriate advisor if necessary
Assist in various campus events
Perform additional tasks as needed: shredding, filing, scanning/photocopying, creating event fliers, and assembling New Student Orientation materials
Office coverage during staff meetings and other events
Additional duties may be assigned by a supervisor, such as assisting with orientation, representing the college in outreach efforts and promoting the image of Southwestern Michigan College, and appearing in the college’s promotional materials.
Special Instructions to Applicants You must be enrolled at the College on a full‑time or part‑time basis (minimum of 6 credit hours during fall and spring semesters and 3 credit hours during the summer semester); contact hours will not be used to meet the 6 credit hour minimum.
High‑school students who are dual enrolled are eligible for student employment. You must also meet the credit hour requirement.
OR
You must be enrolled or continuing your education with a four‑year College partner, on the campus of SMC, and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours and at least 1 SMC credit hour during the fall and spring semesters and 3 credit hours and at least 1 SMC credit hour during the summer semester.
All student employees must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for student employment.
Physical Requirements The physical activity of this position:
Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
The physical requirements of this position:
Light work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision:
The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
The conditions the employee will be subject to in this position:
The employee is subject to environmental conditions while providing campus tours. Activities occur inside and outside.
