Overview
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, a global Am Law 100 firm, is seeking a Business Development and Marketing Manager to support our Intellectual Property Practice Group and Food and Beverage and Retail, Fashion and Beauty Industry Teams. We are open to candidates in offices across multiple locations.
Reporting to the Senior Business Development and Marketing Manager for these areas, this role will work closely with practice and industry leadership, partners, and the broader Business Development & Marketing Department to design and execute forward-looking business development and marketing plans that strengthen market position, deepen client relationships, and drive revenue growth.
The ideal candidate will have a background working with an IP group and a comprehensive understanding of BD and marketing for IP litigation in particular. This candidate is a strong project manager with AmLaw 100 experience who can translate priorities and direction into actionable processes and plans; lead RFPs and proposals; leverage data, market intelligence, and CRM tools; and collaborate seamlessly with communications, digital, and events colleagues to raise profile and accelerate pipeline. Candidates must have exceptional communication skills, professional judgment, and the confidence to make proactive recommendations to those in more senior roles and must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
Lead daily intake and prioritization of requests from practice/industry leadership (pitches, events, content, etc), confirming objectives, deadlines, and required inputs.
Meet and communicate daily with attorneys to advise on BD actions for active opportunities.
Perform end-to-end pitch/RFP management: draft and edit content, manage matter/experience collection, manage timelines, and deliver final submissions on deadline.
Develop and maintain core practice/industry messaging and collateral: update pitch templates, capability statements, practice descriptions, representative matters, attorney bios and related website content.
Coordinate cross-functional execution with Communications/PR, Digital Marketing, Events, and other BD team members to ensure consistent messaging and timely delivery of initiatives.
Perform market, client, and prospect research and translate findings into actionable recommendations (targets, talking points, event/speaking opportunities, competitive positioning).
Organize and support events and sponsorships: develop program goals, coordinate logistics with the events team, build and refine invitee lists, manage attorney roles, and track outcomes/follow-up.
Manage rankings, awards, and directory submissions: collect and validate matters, edit submissions, and ensure quality standards are met.
Perform CRM and client intelligence management: enter/update contacts and activities, track pursuits and targets, pull lists, and ensure data quality to support reporting and outreach.
Prepare reporting for the Senior BD & Marketing Manager, Senior Director of BD & Marketing, CMBDO and practice/industry leaders (pipeline/activity updates, campaign/event outcomes, submission status, and key KPIs).
Manage initiative-level budgets and spend tracking for events, sponsorships, and campaigns; reconcile costs and escalate variances as needed.
Ensure quality control on all deliverables (accuracy, consistency, formatting, brand compliance) before circulation to attorneys or clients.
Handle multiple concurrent deadlines daily by maintaining project plans, sending reminders, and proactively removing roadblocks (missing inputs, approvals, or resources).
Required Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of business development and marketing experience in professional services environment, preferably in an AmLaw 100 law firm. Demonstrated experience managing complex, deadline-driven projects and advising senior stakeholders. Preference will be given to individuals who have worked with large Intellectual Property practice groups before.
Education
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field. Advanced degree or JD is a plus.
Computer/Software Knowledge
Required: Standard computer knowledge expected, including experience with the full Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). Experience with Foundation, InterAction, Vuture, and Canva are a plus. Understanding of social media platforms such as LinkedIn for professional use is also a plus.
Work Environment
A varied day-to-day experience. This role is hybrid with an in-office requirement three days each week. Periodic event attendance outside of regular business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel based on firm and team priorities and program support up to 25%.
Salary and Benefits
California: The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000 per year.
Washington DC: The pay range for this position is: $140,000 - $160,000 per year. Medical, vision, and dental coverage is available, including coverage for dependents and domestic partners. Please note that the foregoing compensation and benefit information is a good-faith assessment associated with this position as of the time of this posting and is provided pursuant to the District of Columbia Wage Transparency Omnibus Amendment Act of 2023.
Illinois: The wage range for this position is: $140,000 - $160,000 per year. This position is eligible for medical, vision, and dental insurance. New York: The pay range for this position is: $140,000 - $160,000 per year. Please note that the foregoing compensation information is a good-faith assessment associated with this position only and is provided pursuant to the New York City Salary Transparency Law.
