Job Description
Position Summary
The Produce Manager is responsible for the overall operation, performance, and profitability of the Produce department. This role ensures the highest standards of freshness, quality, merchandising, and customer service while leading and developing a strong team. The Produce Manager manages ordering, inventory, labor, and shrink to achieve sales and operational goals while maintaining a clean, safe, and visually appealing department. Key Responsibilities
Department Operations
Oversee daily operations of the Produce department to ensure freshness, quality, and availability. Maintain department standards for cleanliness, organization, rotation, and food safety. Ensure proper opening, closing, and daily execution of department tasks. Monitor department conditions and take corrective action as needed. Merchandising & Inventory Control
Execute company merchandising standards, planograms, seasonal sets, and promotional displays. Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and proper product placement. Manage ordering, receiving, inventory levels, and product rotation. Minimize shrink through effective inventory management, culling, and handling practices. Customer Service
Deliver an outstanding customer experience by ensuring an attractive, full, and fresh department. Address customer questions and concerns promptly and professionally. Promote a customer‑first culture within the department. Leadership & Team Development
Hire, train, coach, and develop produce associates. Schedule labor effectively to meet business needs while controlling costs. Set clear expectations and hold associates accountable for performance and standards. Conduct performance feedback and support associate growth and engagement. Food Safety, Compliance & Safety
Ensure compliance with food safety standards, sanitation procedures, and company policies. Maintain proper temperature controls, rotation practices, and required documentation. Enforce safety procedures to support a safe working environment. Support loss prevention and shrink reduction initiatives. Financial Performance
Monitor sales, shrink, labor, and expenses. Analyze department results and implement action plans to improve performance. Support store goals related to sales growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction. Qualifications
Required
Previous produce or fresh department management experience. Strong knowledge of fresh produce handling, rotation, and merchandising. Proven leadership and team‑building skills. Strong organization, communication, and problem‑solving abilities. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Ability to lift, push, pull, and stand for extended periods. Preferred
High‑volume retail produce management experience. Experience with inventory control, ordering systems, and shrink reduction. Knowledge of seasonal produce trends and promotional execution. Working Conditions
Retail grocery environment with exposure to refrigerated and wet conditions. Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and bending. Use of knives, pallet jacks, and produce handling equipment. Pay Transparency
Starting rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and may vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Candidates with unique qualifications may be considered for compensation above this range. Dependent on length of service, hours worked, and applicable agreements, benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay, PTO/Vacation pay, paid holidays, bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401(k) eligibility). Associates in this position may be eligible for a quarterly bonus, subject to company bonus plans.
