Overview Director of Behavioral Health responsible for strategic planning, operational oversight, and clinical leadership of mental health and substance abuse programs within the facility. The role collaborates with correctional officers and other medical and mental health professionals to ensure regulatory compliance, manage budgets, supervise multidisciplinary clinical staff, and develop community partnerships to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centered care in a controlled environment.
Responsibilities
Defines department goals, develops policies, and oversees daily operations to improve mental health services.
Oversees treatment services, ensuring adherence to evidence‑based practices and high standards of care.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and investigates critical incidents and manages risks.
Directs recruitment, hiring, training, and performance evaluation of clinical staff (social workers, counselors, therapists).
Prepares, manages, and oversees the department budget and ensures financial viability.
Collaborates with medical, mental health, and correctional staff to enhance quality patient care while maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
Monitors compliance with site‑specific and company policies and procedures, taking appropriate corrective action, and ensuring compliance with ACA, NCCHC standards.
Qualifications Education
A master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field.
Active, unrestricted licensure as an LCSW, LCMHC, LMFT, LMHP, LISW, or equivalent in AL.
Active BLS CPR certification (American Heart Association preferred).
Experience / Requirements
Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in behavioral health, including clinical and administrative leadership in a mental health or acute care setting; correctional healthcare experience preferred.
Strong leadership, budgetary analysis, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Effective communication skills required for building patient rapport and relaying information and treatment plans with other medical and mental health professionals.
Strong organizational skills to track patient treatment plans and progress notes.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and confidential information and adhere to a Code of Conduct and all facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
Must pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening.
