
Individual Giving Officer (Director of Development)

SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director, Individual Giving, the Individual Giving Officer (Director of Development) is responsible for managing a prospect portfolio of donors capable of committing $25,000 or more to the annual fund, institutional endowment, or special projects at the College. This officer works closely with colleagues throughout Institutional Advancement and the College to ensure high-quality engagement and successful resource acquisition.
The officer must work independently and collaboratively as a team member, strategically with the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Relations, senior administrators, faculty, staff, campaign volunteer leaders, and the College President to support college-wide fundraising priorities. The officer must be able to travel up to 25% or more locally and nationally.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Set and execute immediate and long‑term fundraising plans, including strategies to grow and sustain individual fundraising from the College’s constituents.
Meet and exceed annual fundraising goals set annually.
Identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospects toward individual commitments of $25,000 or greater.
Personally visit prospective donors and achieve 20+ meaningful contacts/visits per month.
Oversee projects and events for prospect groups related to various projects.
Support the AVP for Advancement Relations, Senior College Leadership, and Trustees with gift solicitations, including outreach for appointments, preparing briefing documents, and appropriate follow‑up.
Spend approximately 80% of the incumbent’s time actively managing a prospect pool of 125–150 individual prospects, including potentially significant travel.
Develop, document, and implement a strategy for each donor and prospect, increasing their involvement in the College’s activities.
Work closely with volunteers to achieve fundraising goals.
Design, create, and deliver presentations personally to donors and assist others in preparing for such visits.
Draft and submit timely proposals and reports to constituency groups.
Work with Advancement Operations colleagues to actively steward donors and complete the acknowledgment process.
Keep the College’s master files up‑to‑date, including biographical updates and contact reports.
Support annual giving, special projects, planned giving, and campaign goals through active representation of these priorities with constituents.
May supervise administrative staff as required.
Must support Advancement Relations, Institutional Advancement, and the Spelman College community during major events and other activities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three to five years of related experience in fundraising or a related field (such as sales) is required. Master’s degree is preferred. Experience in higher education and with comprehensive fundraising campaigns is highly preferred, and progressive development‑related experience may be considered.
Skills and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, with the ability to read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedural manuals. Must have excellent writing, proofreading, proposal, correspondence, and independent reporting abilities. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in one‑to‑one visits and in groups. Must possess a highly developed sense of propriety in handling sensitive information, adhere to deadlines while managing multiple projects, and have excellent analytical and organizational skills. Must be able to travel locally and nationally.
Technical Proficiency:
Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including preparation of memos, basic correspondence, and spreadsheets. Must be internet savvy and able to use email systems such as MS Outlook or Lotus Notes. Familiarity with fundraising software is a plus.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid driver’s license.
