Job Title: Director of Transportation
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
Receives Guidance From: Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent
Full Time: Overtime Status - Exempt

Job Purpose

The Director of Transportation provides leadership and oversight for the district's student transportation services. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all district buses and transportation programs. The Director manages transportation staff, develops routes and schedules, oversees fleet maintenance, and ensures compliance with state and federal transportation regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of student transportation, including route planning, scheduling, and safety.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations and policies.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate bus drivers, mechanics, and transportation staff.
  • Develop and monitor the transportation department budget, including fleet maintenance, fuel, and equipment procurement.
  • Maintain and oversee fleet management, including vehicle inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Implement and monitor safety programs, including driver training, bus drills, and student behavior policies.
  • Respond to transportation-related incidents, emergencies, or complaints in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, staff, and parents to ensure efficient and safe transportation services.
  • Maintain accurate records related to transportation operations, compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Recommend and implement transportation policies and operational improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with the Superintendent, COO, Board of Education, staff, students, and parents regarding transportation matters.
  • Ensure confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion in managing sensitive information.
  • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use.
  • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Regular, dependable, in person, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy.
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, all other district, state and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by LCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of student transportation operations, bus safety regulations, and fleet management.
  • Familiarity with Mississippi Department of Education transportation regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage transportation budgets and resources.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergencies and ensure student safety.
  • Commitment to providing safe, efficient, and equitable transportation services.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervises bus drivers, bus monitors, mechanics, and transportation staff.
  • Provides guidance, performance evaluation, and professional development for assigned personnel.
  • Ensures staff compliance with district policies, transportation regulations, and operational procedures.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the transportation department.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Management, Business Administration, Education or related field preferred.
  • MS Educator License with 486 endorsement preferred.
  • Must hold a valid CDL with PS endorsement.
  • Experience in transportation management, fleet operations, or student transportation preferred.
  • Experience in a supervisory or management role preferred.
  • Knowledge of transportation regulations, safety standards, and fleet maintenance practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to student safety, operational efficiency, and quality service.

Terms of Employment:

Salary and work year as established by the Lamar County Board of Education.

Work Environment:

The Director of Transportation will work beyond an eight-hour day and a five-day week to take care of daily work, attend meetings, conferences and district/school activities. They must have excellent communication, problem-solving and small-group process skills. A substantial portion of the work will involve conflict management and sensitive situations with staff, parents, and patrons. Confidentiality is crucial. Workloads are heavy and timelines can be unreasonably short. Requests and issues are often received which require immediate attention and conflict with other priorities.
