About the Role: As the Comic and Collectible Art Dealer at Metropolis, you will play a pivotal role in our company's growth and success. Based in our Manhattan (NYC) office, you will report to and collaborate closely with our CEO and President. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to revitalize our department's direction and growth strategy, using your expertise in the realm of Fine and Original Comic Book Art. Your responsibilities will encompass leading client relationships, expanding revenue opportunities, and developing valuable networks within the art market. Some travel is required for conventions, business development, and appraisals.
QUALIFICATIONS Extensive, demonstrated expertise in Fine Art. A profound passion and profound knowledge of both pop culture and the fine art market, ideally with 5-7 years of experience in the auction business, galleries, or museums. Familiarity with comic books and comic book art is highly advantageous. A proven track record of setting sales records and spearheading market leadership. Demonstrated strength in strategic thinking and a keen business acumen. Proficiency in financial matters and a history of formulating and executing complex deals. Exceptional negotiation skills, essential for thriving in high-stakes situations. A collaborative team player who excels in small, close-knit groups. Strong ability to remain composed under pressure and masterful time management skills. Proven capacity to meet strict deadlines, coupled with excellent organizational skills. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction. Highly motivated and proactive, with a positive outlook that inspires others. A comprehensive understanding of Metropolis, its unique culture, and services, as well as a deep knowledge of auction principles and practices. Willingness and availability for travel as required, for conventions, business development, and appraisals.
RESPONSIBILITIES As the Comic and Collectible Art Dealer at Metropolis, you’ll take charge of the following key responsibilities: Expertise & Business Development Act as a subject matter expert in the Fine Art category. Proactively win and negotiate business deals, with a focus on masterpieces and high value works. Introduce new opportunities and clients based on market knowledge. Strategic Direction Set departmental direction and implement a growth strategy. Collaborate with local Business Management, Commercial Office, Specialists, and Proposals departments on business development initiatives. Sales & Revenue Targets Ensure the department meets its sales, revenue, and profit targets. Client Relations & Networks Develop and maintain relationships with top clients, dealers, and collectors. Lead client relationships and work with Client Strategy to build teams around key clients. Collaborate with other teams to expand client relationships for revenue growth. Proactively identify key external/internal stakeholders, clients, and contacts to create productive networks. Special Business Initiatives Participate in Special Business Forums as a lead. Participate in structuring and negotiating commercially viable deals, with a focus on increasing profitability. Appraisals & Valuations Work closely with the Estates, Appraisals & Valuations department to generate long-term business opportunities and reconnect with inactive clients. International Engagement Engage in international and domestic travel for business development, management, client visits, events, exhibitions, conventions, and art fairs. Art Evaluation & Appraisal Generate profitable business opportunities by evaluating and appraising art for auction, private sale, and the marketplace. Assess art material from historical/artistic importance, rarity, condition, and market value standpoints. Provide estimates to clients and maintain follow-up on property awaiting consignment. Client Service & Development Negotiate sale terms, explain auction and private sale procedures, and provide seamless service to clients. Actively develop and manage client relationships to enhance client loyalty and generate business. Department Management Produce and manage department appraisal and proposal coordination. Execute pre-sale marketing strategies in collaboration with the Marketing department. Catalog Management Oversee all aspects of catalog production, ensuring the highest standards and meeting scheduled deadlines. Initiate and conduct regular condition and estimate check sessions. Ensure timely completion of all necessary photography. Contribute to research, write, and/or delegate catalogue entries. Proofread all catalogue entries, editorials, and associated marketing materials.
Pay:
$50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year plus commission
