LIBRARY AND MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Library and Multimedia Technology Assistant supports the school community and assists certificated teachers in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in library, technology, multimedia, and related subject matter areas.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Library and Multimedia Technology Assistant provides independent paraprofessional support in either or both library and multimedia technology settings, including instruction and monitoring of student progress.
A Library Technician independently performs advanced, or paraprofessional of basic library practices and library media.
An Education Assistant II works under the close supervision of a teacher or specialist and, within the framework of established procedures, performs a variety of classroom instructional and support duties.
An Education Assistant I performs routine, unskilled classroom instructional and support tasks, under the close supervision of a teacher, which do not require previous knowledge of classroom procedures and practices.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is provided by the principal or designee at the local school site.
In the library, the assignment may require the indirect and direct supervision and training of volunteers.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Tutor individuals or small groups in library usage and technology, reinforcing instruction and assisting with multimedia resources.
Prepare lessons and evaluate students based on established guidelines.
Monitor and report on student behavior and progress.
Provide support to teachers by setting up work areas, displays, and operating technology and audio-visual equipment.
Assist students with technology-related equipment, including computer hardware and software.
Plan and arrange book and media displays.
Select and read stories appropriate for various age groups, and support students with research projects.
Maintain, catalog, and process library materials; mend and shelve books as needed.
Collaborate with teachers on programs and materials to meet student needs.
Ensure student health and safety by following established regulations.
Participate in meetings and in-service training programs.
Perform related duties as assigned.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Library media usage, technology-related multimedia programs, and equipment.
Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides.
Fundamental purposes, typical content, and routine procedures of modern public school system libraries.
Safe practices in classroom, computer lab, and library settings.
Child guidance principles and correct English usage.
Ability to:
Assist a certificated teacher with library and technology activities.
Select books and reading material in terms of children's preferences and reading abilities.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
Provide technical assistance with computers and multimedia devices.
Perform a variety of library clerical tasks and operate typical library/media equipment.
Write legibly and follow both oral and written directions.
Learn and apply school policies related to library and instructional activities.
Work cooperatively with others and monitor student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Equivalent of high school graduation and one of the following:
One year of experience as an Education Assistant II.
Two years of higher education (48 semester units or 60 quarter units).
Associate of Arts degree or higher.
Experience:
Some experience working with children in organized settings, preferably with technology and library resources.
Desirable:
Coursework in child development, education, or psychology.
Oral and written proficiency in a second language.
Working Environment:
Classroom, computer lab, and library settings.
Contact will be required with students, district staff and the public.
Physical Demands:
Employees in this classification must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others.
These include, but are not limited to:
Lifting and carrying light objects (up to 20 pounds).
Operating various equipment.
Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students.
