Department Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UC Berkeley sponsors 30 varsity sports programs and employs more than 275 staff members and coaches who support over 850 student‑athletes in the NCAA.

Responsibilities

As the technical authority for live athletic productions, you will:

  • Lead control room production and manage the crew at California Memorial Stadium for Cal Football.
  • Serve as the technical show caller, create and manage content for all home Cal Football games, and orchestrate end‑to‑end production of the video board, technical control room, and musical atmosphere to deliver a professional‑grade fan experience.
  • Advise and help grow studio operations, broadcast, podcast, and content creation leveraging your technical background.
  • Formulate a fan‑experience strategy that aligns marketing, sponsorship, NIL initiatives, and broadcast production into an emotional narrative that elevates the brand.
  • Architect a professional‑grade training ecosystem, scale and mentor a student workforce to execute elite, Power 4‑caliber productions.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, Operations, Marketing, and Spirit squads to synchronize logistics and integrate departmental goals into the live event framework.
  • Spearhead the evolution of gameday traditions using emerging technology such as motion graphics, lighting, mobile apps, and AI, and gather data‑driven fan feedback to modernize the atmosphere.
  • Manage gameday entertainment budgets, track expenses, and evaluate fan engagement via data to improve future events.
  • Govern the post‑game review process, analyze fan sentiment and production performance, and implement continuous improvements to maintain Power 4 conference excellence.

Required Qualifications

  • Expert ability to direct live, multi‑camera productions, cueing audio, video, lighting, and on‑field talent with precision.
  • Deep knowledge of professional broadcast hardware and show‑flow software.
  • Skill in creating dynamic motion graphics for the video board.
  • Ability to draft minute‑by‑minute rundowns that integrate technical cues with entertainment segments.
  • Proficiency in integrating modern fan‑engagement tools such as synchronized LED lighting, mobile app triggers, and AI‑driven content.
  • Capability to translate corporate partner KPIs into high‑energy in‑venue moments that drive ROI.
  • Analytical skills to interpret fan sentiment and attendance data to engineer emotional arcs that increase loyalty and revenue.
  • Expert understanding of brand storytelling to reinforce the Cal identity in all visuals and announcements.
  • Knowledge of NIL regulations for showcasing student‑athletes in the live show flow.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities, multitasking, and effective listening.
  • Coaching and mentoring skills for lower‑level staff.
  • Time and project management skills for prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Interpersonal communication and people‑management skills for interacting with clients, staff, and vendors.
  • Fiscal responsibility for planning and managing the gameday entertainment budget.
  • Experience recruiting, supervising, and scheduling students/interns for simultaneous events.
  • Ability to synchronize goals across units.
  • Familiarity with production benchmarks of elite NCAA conferences or professional sports leagues.
  • Current knowledge of Atlantic Coast Conference rules, NCAA standards, and other governing agencies, avoiding violations.
  • Advanced knowledge of program activity and best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with relevant computer applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

The budgeted salary range for this position is $75,000–$105,000. The role is full‑time (40 hours per week), exempt, and monthly‑paid. Eligible for UC benefits.
