Web Software Developer (MicrobeTrace – Full-Stack)

The Web Software Developer (MicrobeTrace – Full-Stack) supports the CDC National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP) by designing, developing, enhancing, and maintaining the MicrobeTrace web application and related public-facing and internal informatics tools. This role delivers secure, scalable, and user-centered web solutions that support pathogen genomics, molecular epidemiology, and public health data visualization.

The developer works collaboratively with CDC scientists, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, and informatics teams to ensure MicrobeTrace and related applications are reliable, accessible, and compliant with CDC IT governance, security, and accessibility standards. Work is primarily remote, but candidate must live within 50 miles of the CDC campus in Atlanta, GA for meetings and support. This position is contingent upon a contract award.

Key Responsibilities

Integration & Performance Optimization

Integrate front-end components with back-end services and data sources.
Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability across environments.
Support troubleshooting, defect resolution, and continuous improvement activities.

Security, Governance & Compliance

Ensure applications comply with CDC IT security, privacy, and data protection requirements.
Support CDC EPLC documentation, reviews, and approvals as required.
Implement and maintain Section 508 / WCAG accessibility compliance for all web interfaces.
Apply secure coding practices and support vulnerability remediation.

DevOps & Operational Support

Support deployment, configuration, and maintenance of web applications in Azure-hosted environments.
Assist with version control, release management, and environment coordination.
Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and operational support activities.
Work closely with CDC program staff, informatics leadership, and technical teams to ensure solutions align with mission needs.
Prepare technical documentation, design artifacts, and user guidance.
Support demonstrations, stakeholder briefings, and knowledge transfer activities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
Minimum 3–5 years of web application development experience, including full-stack development.
Experience deploying and supporting applications on Apache Tomcat and Apache HTTP Server.
Experience working in cloud environments (Azure preferred).
Knowledge of secure coding practices and web application security fundamentals.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting MicrobeTrace, public health, or bioinformatics-related applications.
Experience supporting CDC, HHS, NIH, FDA, or other federal public health programs.
Familiarity with public health data visualization or analytics tools.

to join an exciting team developing innovative solutions to strengthen CDPH's public health data ecosystem. The incumbent will join the team leading the design and implementation of disease prevention and control activities related to reportable communicable diseases. Responsibilities will include the following:
Applying advanced professional public health informatics concepts and extensive knowledge of industry practices to projects of all levels of scope and complexity.

Leading project teams in developing innovative informatics and public health data collection, monitoring, management, and analysis systems.

Identifying and implementing strategies for integrating multiple data systems and improving existing public health surveillance data systems and infrastructure. Conducting complex database design, data quality assurance, and quality improvement projects.
