POSITION:
District Athletic Director
FLSA STATUS:
Exempt
Qualifications Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent. Minimum five years of coaching, athletic administration or related experience. Must possess or obtain a South Carolina Educator Certification. Previous leadership or administrative experience preferred.
Reports To Superintendent
Salary Base upon experience and Board approval.
Job Duties
Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive district‑wide athletic program aligned with the district's mission and goals.
Provide leadership and direction to school-based athletic directors and coaches.
Promote a culture of sportsmanship, integrity, and academic excellence among student-athletes.
Ensure equitable access to athletic programs across all schools.
Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations of the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) and other governing bodies.
Monitor eligibility requirements, Title IX compliance, and district policies.
Maintain accurate records and reports related to athletics.
Assist principals in the recruitment, hiring, supervision, and evaluation of coaches and athletic staff.
Provide professional development opportunities for coaches and athletic personnel.
Address personnel concerns and ensure adherence to district expectations.
Develop and manage the district athletic budget.
Oversee purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of athletic equipment and facilities.
Seek partnerships, sponsorships, and grant opportunities to support athletic programs.
Coordinate district‑wide athletic schedules, competitions, and events.
Ensure proper supervision, security, and medical coverage at athletic events.
Oversee transportation logistics for athletic teams.
Serve as the primary liaison between the district and community stakeholders regarding athletics.
Promote athletic programs through media, communications, and community engagement.
Build positive relationships with parents, booster clubs, and local organizations.
Standards Required To Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements: Sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations, and mobility required.
Data Conception: Ability to compare and/or judge readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communications: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; give and receive assignments and direction.
Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of laws, policies and procedures, technical and professional studies, reference books and publications; prepare performance appraisals, policies, strategic plans, complex reports, schedules, correspondence; speak with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Apply logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions; interpret technical instructions; manage a diverse staff; make independent judgments.
Verbal Aptitude: Deliver information, explain procedures, give verbal and written instructions, counsel and teach employees and students.
Numerical Aptitude: Add, subtract, multiply, divide, use mathematical formulas, determine percentages and decimals, calculate time.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for proper length, width, shape and visually read information.
Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery; operate motor vehicles.
Manual Dexterity: Handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches with minimal eye‑hand‑foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Deal with people beyond instructions; adapt to stress, emergencies, volatile situations, tight deadlines; occasional risk or tension.
Physical Communications: Talk and hear (expressing ideas by means of spoken words; hearing sounds).
Terms 240 days. The Division of Personnel will establish a salary based upon the recommendation and approval by the Superintendent and the Sumter School District Board of Trustees.
Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation and professional personnel.
