Solidworks Designer

Actalent, Fort Worth, TX, United States

Job Title: SolidWorks Designer

Job Description The SolidWorks Designer will create and refine detailed mechanical designs and assemblies for heavy structural steel components and related equipment. This role focuses on using SolidWorks to develop accurate 3D models, weldments, and machine parts, while supporting standard engineering department processes such as bills of materials (BOMs) and production documentation. The designer will collaborate closely with the design team and production staff to translate design input into practical, manufacturable solutions for a dynamic, hands‑on industrial environment.

Responsibilities

Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks for weldments, assemblies, and machined components.

Design heavy structural steel components, including structural frames, mounts, and related support structures.

Develop and update complete and accurate bills of materials (BOMs) in alignment with standard engineering department processes.

Produce detailed fabrication and assembly drawings suitable for use in machining, welding, and assembly operations.

Design and refine sheet metal components, machine parts, pump-related components, and mounting solutions as needed.

Apply mechanical design principles to ensure structural integrity, manufacturability, and ease of assembly.

Perform and document basic hand calculations in a production environment to support design decisions when required.

Collaborate with shop personnel in machining, welding, and painting areas to address design questions and resolve issues.

Incorporate feedback from the production floor to improve designs and support continuous improvement of products and processes.

Use drafting and engineering standards to maintain consistency, clarity, and accuracy in all design documentation.

Support finite element analysis (FEA) workflows by preparing models and integrating results into design improvements when applicable.

Manage multiple design tasks simultaneously, taking design input and driving it through to completed, production‑ready drawings.

Work closely with the design team in the office and coordinate visits to the shop floor to verify fit, function, and manufacturability of designs.

Essential Skills

Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modeling and detailed drafting.

Hands‑on experience creating weldments and complex assemblies in SolidWorks.

Ability to design and detail machined parts and heavy structural steel components.

Solid understanding of bills of materials (BOMs) and standard engineering department processes.

Mechanical design experience covering structural steel, mount design, pump design, sheet metal, and machine design.

Ability to create clear, accurate engineering drawings suitable for fabrication and assembly.

Comfort working with 3D modeling tools to support engineering and production needs.

Capability to perform basic hand calculations to support design decisions in a production environment.

Strong attention to detail and a high level of intensity in taking design input and independently driving it to completion.

Effective communication skills to work with both office‑based design staff and shop floor personnel.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in the oil and gas industry, particularly with weldments and heavy structural steel components.

Prior exposure to a manufacturing or production environment.

Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) concepts and workflows.

Background in drafting and engineering practices for industrial equipment.

Ability to adapt quickly to changing project requirements and priorities.

Strong problem‑solving skills with a practical, hands‑on mindset.
