Position Summary
Sr. Phlebotomist – Onsite, Monday – Friday, Livonia, MI. Serves patients by retrieving blood, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
Primary Responsibilities
Verify test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log and addressing discrepancies with unit personnel.
Verify patient identity by reading patient identification.
Obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and finger sticks.
Maintain specimen integrity using aseptic technique and following department procedures; observe isolation procedures.
Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintain daily tallies of collections performed.
Maintain quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; record results in the quality‑control log and report required changes.
Ensure a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by adhering to standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; refer unresolved orders back to the originator for clarification and report to supervisor.
Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and joining professional organizations.
Enhance phlebotomy department and hospital reputation by taking ownership of new requests, exploring opportunities to add value, and pursuing continuous improvement.
Manage PHI on a regular basis, completing HIPAA/PHI privacy, general policy compliance, and security training within 30 days of hire and maintaining current Natera training status.
Logistically manage patient report printing, billing question triage, and scheduling courier pick‑ups (FedEx or Medspeed).
Qualifications
Minimum five years of phlebotomy experience.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Phlebotomy certificate if required by state.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to serve and protect the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and JCAHO standards.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work in an office setting (scrubs required) with a continuous requirement to track each draw.
