Accounting Manager / Controller (Dayton)
Miami Valley Community Action Partnership, Dayton, OH, United States
If you are an experienced nonprofit accountant who values clarity, consistency, and mission‑aligned work, this role will likely resonate.
We are a long‑standing, grant‑funded nonprofit serving the Dayton community through housing and economic stability programs. Our funding environment is complex, our expectations are clear, and our culture values accuracy, accountability, and calm leadership over flash or constant reinvention.
This Accounting Manager / Controller‑level role reports directly to the CFO and owns day‑to‑day accounting operations. It is best suited for someone who has
lived inside
a grant‑funded organization and understands the rhythm, responsibility, and discipline that comes with it.
This is an on‑site role in Dayton, Ohio.
What You’ll Actually Be Responsible For
Owning accounting operations in a multi‑grant, compliance‑driven nonprofit environment
Managing month‑end close that is calm, timely, and repeatable—not heroic
Overseeing accounting for concurrent federal, state, and local grants, each with distinct reporting calendars, cost‑allocation rules, and audit exposure
Preparing financial reports that leadership and funders rely on without second‑guessing
Providing clear expectations, hands‑on coaching, and consistent follow‑through with accounting staff
Partnering with program leaders who are mission‑driven but not finance‑trained, translating requirements into workable guidance
Maintaining internal controls and audit readiness at all times—not just during audit season
Overseeing accounting for affiliated housing or related entities
What This Role Is (and Is Not)
This is a mature, operational role, not a turnaround and not a blank slate
Success comes from rigor, consistency, and stewardship—not reinvention or constant change
You will have meaningful ownership while partnering closely with the CFO, without needing final say on every issue
This Role Is a Strong Fit If You:
Have 7+ years of nonprofit, government, or grant‑funded accounting experience
Are deeply comfortable with Uniform Guidance and Single Audit expectations
Prefer steady leadership and clear accountability over ambiguity
Take pride in accuracy, clean audits, and predictable processes
Do your best work in environments where impact matters more than recognition
CPA or equivalent depth of experience is highly valued.
Compensation & Environment
$85,000–$100,000, depending on experience
Strong benefits package
Stable organization with long‑tenured leadership
People‑centered culture that values professionalism and respect
If you do your best work in stable, mission‑driven organizations where accuracy matters and recognition is quiet, this role may feel like home.
