
Electrical Design Engineer (Minneapolis)

Job Description:
Client is seeking a Designer I to support its Solar Design team within the electric distribution organization. This role is responsible for designing and upgrading distribution systems to support residential and commercial solar interconnections. The position blends fieldwork, customer interaction, and office-based design activities and is ideal for candidates with utility, construction, or engineering-related backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities
Design and upgrade electric distribution systems to support solar interconnections
Develop transformer upgrades, pole-to-pole, and pole-to-house distribution designs
Conduct site checks at residential and commercial customer locations
Research system maps and existing infrastructure to determine design requirements
Create detailed upgrade plans using GIS applications
Develop and provide cost estimates to engineering teams
Manage multiple design and construction projects concurrently
Collaborate with engineers, DER groups, and internal stakeholders
Interact directly with customers during field visits and site assessments
Typical Day
Receive design and project assignments from a manager or DER group
Perform site checks and field visits as required
Balance multiple design and construction projects
Complete design work and documentation in the office or remotely
Coordinate regularly with internal teams and customers
Team & Work Environment
Team size: Approximately 8 people
Supports both internal business partners and external customers
Collaborative, supportive team environment with independent ownership of assignments
Training & Ramp-Up
Expected ramp-up time: 6–8 weeks
Training will focus on Xcel Energy processes, procedures, and policies
Required Qualifications
Strong organizational and multitasking skills
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and manage priorities
Professional and personable demeanor when working with customers
Background in construction, engineering, mapping, field staking, or related experience
Experience working with or for a utility company preferred
Preferred Qualifications
Utility distribution design experience
Experience with GIS tools
Familiarity with SAP
Customer-facing experience
Utility construction experience (non-residential preferred)
Bachelor’s degree preferred
