Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs specialized work in receiving, processing, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency communications for police, fire, animal control, and after-hours utility services. Operates advanced communication systems and serves as a critical link between the public and emergency responders. This position is designated as a first responder under applicable state law.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Experience: Previous dispatch or emergency communications experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Must obtain Basic Telecommunicator Certification within one (1) year of employment (NCT9-1-1 Academy).

Must obtain TLETS/NLETS certification within required timeframe.

Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

Essential Job Functions

Receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

Dispatches police, fire, and animal control personnel using radio and CAD systems.

Operates multi-channel radio, E911 systems, CAD, TDD, recording systems, and related technology.

Provides accurate, timely, and critical information to field personnel.

Maintains detailed and accurate logs, records, and reports of calls and activities.

Monitors jail operations and video systems for safety and compliance.

Assists walk-in customers, including receiving reports and payments as assigned.

Communicates effectively with public safety personnel, city departments, and external agencies.

Maintains composure, judgment, and decision-making in high-stress situations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of

Emergency communications systems and dispatch operations.

Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Geographic layout, streets, and response areas of the City and surrounding areas.

Customer service principles and public interaction practices.

City policies and procedures.

Skills in

Multitasking and prioritizing in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Clear and effective verbal communication, especially under stress.

Operating CAD, radio systems, and emergency communication technology.

Critical thinking and sound decision-making.

Team collaboration and coordination.

Physical Demands/Work Environment
Work is performed in a communications center with moderate noise levels. Requires prolonged sitting, frequent use of computers and keyboards, and wearing a headset for extended periods. Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations. Regular exposure to stressful and emotionally charged situations involving individuals in crisis.
