Plant Utilities Engineer 2 – Facilities Services
Position Overview
Shift: First shift – 7:00 am–3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
Full‑time, probationary/permanent, SG16 position represented by CSEA. Entry‑level salary: $63,136.
Job Summary
A Plant Utilities Engineer 2 performs the activities and tasks listed in the Classification Standard for Plant Utilities Engineer 1. In addition, the Engineer schedules, plans, and lays out work and supervises a crew of skilled and semi‑skilled employees involved in the operation and maintenance of heat‑generating, air‑conditioning, HVAC, and electrical equipment. Incumbents also oversee systems maintenance, health and safety issues, and energy‑conservation projects.
Responsibilities
Supervise Plant Utilities Engineers 1 and other lower‑level staff engaged in plant operations, maintenance, and repair functions; may supervise contractors.
Schedule, plan, and supervise the activities of skilled and semi‑skilled employees and contractors involved with plant operations, maintenance, and repair activities.
Provide training, instruction, and assistance to staff and implement changes in procedures to improve efficiency.
Inspect plant equipment and operations to ensure proper maintenance, scheduling, and safe and efficient operations.
Prepare estimates of materials, parts needs, and costs; order or direct ordering of materials, equipment, and parts.
Maintain tool and equipment inventories per applicable policies and standards.
Supervise and coordinate the handling of hazardous materials and respond to incidents with potential environmental impact or safety concerns. Identify budget requirements, including staffing, repair, maintenance, material, and equipment needs.
Make recommendations to assist with preparation of annual operating budgets.
Enforce energy‑conservation protocols and supervise the installation and modification of equipment to obtain peak energy efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of permanent service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Essential Service Status
Plant Utilities Engineers 2 are considered Essential Service per the Essential Service Policy. Employees designated essential must remain on duty or report to work at or before their scheduled start time unless directed or permitted otherwise by their immediate supervisor.
