Harness Design Engineer
Pentangle Tech Services | P5 Group, Sunnyvale, CA, United States
Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Harness Design Engineer to lead the end-to-end development of spider harnesses used for integrating autonomy compute, networking, and sensor systems across multiple vehicle platforms. This is a hands-on role requiring deep expertise in automotive electrical systems, harness design, and vehicle power architecture. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute immediately with minimal onboarding.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of spider harnesses for autonomy hardware integration (compute, networking, sensors).
Own the full harness lifecycle:
Concept design and architecture
First-article prototype builds
2D/3D harness drawings and documentation
Validation and DVP (Design Verification Plan) execution
Production-ready release and scaling
Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and integration teams to ensure seamless system integration.
Define routing strategies, connector selection, wire sizing, shielding, and protection schemes.
Support vehicle-level power distribution design and grounding strategies.
Perform and support validation testing including:
Electrical continuity and signal integrity
Environmental and durability testing
Drive issue resolution during prototype builds and vehicle integration.
Ensure designs meet automotive standards for safety, reliability, and manufacturability.
Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to transition designs into production.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
5+ years of experience in automotive wiring harness design .
Strong knowledge of:
Vehicle power architecture (12V/48V systems)
Signal types (Ethernet, CAN, LVDS, sensor interfaces)
EMI/EMC considerations and shielding techniques
Hands-on experience with:
Harness routing and packaging
Connector selection and crimping standards
Prototype builds and vehicle integration
Experience creating harness drawings using tools such as:
CATIA, Capital, Zuken, or similar
Experience with DVP, validation testing, and production release processes.
Ability to work in fast-paced, prototype-heavy environments with minimal supervision.
