Electro-Mechanical Motor Design
Austin Community College, Syracuse, NY, United States
Position Title: Electro-Mechanical Motor Design Co-op
D&D Motor Systems is a small, family‑run business that designs and manufactures electric DC brush motors for a variety of e‑mobility platforms, hydraulic systems, and more. With over 23 years of experience, our motors are used in a wide range of applications and industries, including: Golf carts, auto haulers, mining vehicles, aerial lifts, material handling equipment, go‑karts, ATVs, UTVs, boats, lawn mowers, trailers, dump trucks, and ice resurfacing machines.
We proudly operate our own production lines in New York. Currently, we are in a business development phase and are expanding our product line with more advanced electric motor technologies.
The candidate MUST be a resident of New York state or be willing to become a resident before starting the internship. Requirements are a New York State license and a formal Lease or Housing Agreement. This is so we can get a partial funding re‑imbursement from NYSERDA. Any offer is contingent upon getting that NYSERDA approval.
Who Are You?
We are seeking a creative, hands‑on, and motivated student who is eager to learn and grow. You will be working closely with our engineering team and other co‑ops on various exciting projects. You do not need prior experience in everything listed, just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and take ownership of your work.
Example Projects You May Work On:
Developing standard procedures for testing electric motors (based on IEEE/IEC/NEMA)
Performing Electromagnetic FEM simulations using ANSYS, COMSOL, or Altair
Performing Structural FEM Simulation in SolidWorks
Conducting market research on AC/DC motor applications to support business growth
Writing white papers on specific electric motor applications
Supporting website and application development
Assisting with 2D and 3D CAD design of products
Required Qualifications:
Enrolled in Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, or related programs
Basic understanding of electric motors and motor control circuitry
Familiarity with measurement tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, calipers, gauges, etc.)
Experience with at least one programming language
Knowledge of CAD tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
Teamwork experience and effective communication skills
Good time management and task responsibility
Previous internship or co‑op experience is a plus

Preferred Qualifications:
FEM simulation experience with ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL, or FEMM
Experience with Field‑Oriented Control (FOC) drive simulations
Familiarity with standard electric motor parameter extraction methods
Hands‑on experience testing electric motors
Mechanical and thermal modeling of electric machines
2D and 3D design experience using AutoCAD or SolidWorks
Knowledge of winding processes for electric motors
Strong technical writing skills (e.g., scientific or white papers)
Basic Responsibilities:
You will receive training and guidance from senior engineers. Based on your interests and abilities, you may work on:
