Job Overview
9‑1‑1 Dispatcher for the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department. Position may be open for up to six months.
Key Responsibilities
Receive and process emergency and non‑emergency 9‑1‑1 calls, determine nature, location, priority, and supplement caller information.
Enter incident reports into the computer system or refer citizens appropriately; update or cancel events as needed.
Transfer calls to appropriate agencies, answer incoming agency calls, and take appropriate action.
Perform records checks for law‑enforcement and authorized county personnel.
Document officer information on suspects, confirm, enter and validate warrants and arrests, run checks on guns, property and registrations.
Verify and relay information between emergency responders, citizens and other parties via telephone and mobile terminals.
Maintain logs, files and other records related to dispatching activity; conduct clerical work as required.
Read and apply agency and communications division policies, procedures and regulations.
Provide courteous and cooperative service to the public and City staff and promote a harmonious workplace.
Contribute to unit efficiency by offering suggestions and participating as an active team member.
Use standard office equipment, including computer.
Essential Duties & Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and at least one year of public‑safety or customer‑service experience, or equivalent combination.
Valid driver’s license.
Must complete dispatch training, EMS dispatch, NCIC/NCJIS and CPR certification within 12 months of employment.
Ability to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, swing and graveyard shifts and overtime.
Excellent interpersonal, customer‑service, organizational, coping, diplomatic, tactical, compassionate and patient skills.
Ability to remain calm, focused, organized and to recall information instantly during high‑pressure situations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Multitasking, prioritizing and categorizing information.
Effective listening and ability to communicate with upset, emotional or threatening individuals.
Experience with diverse socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge & Skills
Geographic features and directional information.
Call screening techniques and phone etiquette.
Office practices and procedures, including records management.
Effective oral and written communication.
Multitasking.
Physical Demands & Working Environment
Work in an office setting, using standard office equipment; sit for extended periods; lift and carry up to 20 pounds; vision and hearing required; exposure to intense stress.
