Summary Description
The Middle School Content Specialist has the responsibility for his/her department and builds the capacity of the department to analyze achievement data for improved instruction. The specialist ensures accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support is available for all students, contributes to building and sustaining a community of learners, and is an exemplary teacher with a proven record of increasing student achievement. The content specialist works directly with adults to support the implementation of the instructional program and observes teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning. He/she focuses on coordination of the instructional program and collaboration among teachers within departments and across teams. The content specialist needs to be certified in the appropriate content areas (Arts/PE specialists must hold certification in the relevant area). Additional time and compensation are provided to support these responsibilities. Physical Demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Special Requirements : Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

Job Specific Information
Salary range: $64,591 – $131,472, based on education and experience. This job includes required summer days, for which you will be compensated at your regular rate of pay.

Knowledge and application of the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

Education, Training & Experience

Holder of a master's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution, or within one year of completing this requirement.

Completion of OAT 1 by the beginning of the second year and OAT 2 by the end of the second year in assignment.

Minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience, with one year in MCPS preferred.

Appropriate middle school teaching experience within the subject fields of the department.

Demonstrated skill in working effectively with people.

Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered if they provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Selection, Continence & Evaluation
Selection will be made by the principal and a team that includes teachers from the content department. Upon implementation of the career lattice, content specialists will be required to achieve lead teacher status. Evaluation will follow the standards of the Teacher Professional Growth System.

Certificate & License
Meets the Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for the appropriate content area.
