Summary Description
The Middle School Content Specialist is responsible for the department, building the capacity to analyze achievement data for improved instruction. The specialist ensures accelerated and enriched instruction and intervention support is available for all students, contributes to building and sustaining a community of learners, and serves as an exemplary teacher demonstrating success in increasing student achievement. The specialist works with administrators to support instructional program implementation, observes teachers to assist them in improving teaching and learning, and focuses on coordination of instructional programs and collaboration among teachers within departments and across teams. The specialist must be certified in the relevant content areas. For Arts/PE specialists, certification is required in one of those areas. Additional time and compensation are provided to support these responsibilities.
Job Specific Information
Salary range: $64,591 – $131,472 based on education and experience. Additional compensation is provided for required summer days. Benefits information is available through the school district's website.
Physical Demands and Special Requirements
Physical demands and job duties as required. Must attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

Ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System.
Education, Training, Experience
Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution, or within one year of achieving this requirement; completion of OAT 1 by the beginning of year two and OAT 2 by the end of year two; minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience, with one year in MCPS preferred; appropriate middle school teaching experience within subject fields of the department. Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered if they provide the necessary knowledge and skills.
Selection and Continuance of Service
Selected by the principal and a team including teachers from the content department. When the career lattice is implemented, content specialists will need to achieve lead teacher status.
Evaluation
Will be evaluated using the standards of the Teacher Professional Growth System.
Certificate License
Meets the Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for the appropriate content area.
