Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Athletic Communications, the Athletics Communications Assistant supports Susquehanna University’s Division III athletics by producing regional and national visibility through creative video/digital content, media relations, press releases, media guides and the SURiverHawks.com website. This is a one‑year appointment, with the possibility of subsequent reappointments up to a total of three years. The position is non‑exempt under FLSA regulations.
Specific Responsibilities
Hire, train, and manage student staff in the office and during contests.
Serve as liaison with the Sports Media and Communications Department to collaborate on student programming, employment, and scheduling.
Maintain and manage the athletics website (SURiverHawks.com) and social media platforms to recruit student‑athletes and inform alumni, parents and the university community.
Develop video/digital content for the athletics website, social media, athletic development, individual team and marketing materials.
Act as primary contact for multiple sports.
Handle sports media relations, support the hometown news release program, and write information for media on the university’s varsity sports programs. Pitch human interest stories to local and national media.
Staff press areas and official scoring areas at home sporting events, while maintaining statistical records on student‑athletes.
Produce game programs and other sports publications that maintain the university’s graphic identity.
Assist with live stream coordination and setup to comply with FloSports, Landmark Conference, and NCAA Division III standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: Experience in a sports information office preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of various sports, basic office equipment, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, photo and video editing software. Familiarity with in‑game statistical software (Stat Crew, PrestoStats, NCAA LiveStats). Knowledge of audio/video equipment to run live streams and produce visual content. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, strong attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, and ability to exercise good judgement, confidentiality, and work independently.
Additional Information for Applicant
Willingness to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel to away sporting events.
Valid driver’s license and ability to drive and qualify under the university’s insurance carrier when operating a university or leased vehicle. CPR, AED and First Aid certification is preferred.
This role includes significant interaction with students and campus activities and involves oversight for disciplinary procedures. Candidates are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSA) and must report any Clery Act crime disclosed to them and remain compliant with annual CSA training requirements.
Physical Demand
Requires the ability to walk and carry items to the press box atop the stadium and to other athletic fields, occasional travel to off‑site conferences or sporting events, standing or sitting for extended periods, moving about the campus, and speaking and hearing instruction. Requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, or 10 pounds constantly. Work is conducted indoors and outdoors.
