Position: Utility Systems Operator (Public Works)
The City of Columbus is seeking a motivated and reliable individual to fill a full-time Utility Systems
Operator (Public Works) position. This position will be open until it is filled. This position is responsible for
the operation and maintenance of the Citys water and wastewater systems, along with general Public
Works duties including streets, drainage, parks, and infrastructure maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and maintain water distribution and wastewater collection and treatment systems
Perform system inspections, sampling, and regulatory reporting
Repair water and sewer infrastructure including mains, services, hydrants, and meters
Operate heavy equipment for utility and Public Works projects
Maintain streets, drainage systems, parks, and cemetery grounds
Assist with snow removal, ice control, and seasonal operations
Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED
Valid drivers license (CDL may be required)
Ability to obtain State of Montana Water and Wastewater Operator certification within 12 months
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in water/wastewater systems, construction, or Public Works
Experience operating heavy equipment
Familiarity with underground utilities and infrastructure repair
Position Details
Full-time, permanent position
Outdoor work in all weather conditions
Physically demanding work including lifting, excavation, and equipment operation
Participation in emergency and on-call response required
Wage: $22.00 to $28.00 per hour (DOE)
