This position works under the direct supervision of the Library Manager. The Library Clerk Intern assists in all phases of library activities, with an emphasis on front-line patron services, circulation desk operations, materials management, and resource location assistance. This internship provides valuable hands‑on experience in library operations and public service delivery.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists library users in locating and utilizing library resources, including the catalog, internet databases, and other electronic research tools.

Supports circulation activities by checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and managing overdue items.

Collects fines and fees, processes payments, and ensures proper financial documentation.

Re-shelves materials accurately according to the Dewey Decimal System and assists with regular inventory and shelf maintenance.

Repairs minor damages to books and materials, preparing them for continued circulation.

Registers and assists patrons at public computer workstations, troubleshooting minor issues.

Assists in opening and closing procedures, ensuring the library is properly secured and maintained.

Assists with program preparation, event setup, and other activities designed to engage the public.

Performs additional duties as assigned by the Library Manager to support overall library operations and build professional skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

Basic arithmetic principles and money-handling practices.

Alphabetical and numerical filing systems.

Standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.

Proper techniques for public interaction and professional telephone etiquette.

Basic computer operations and online navigation.

Skill in:

Efficient operation of library-related equipment including computers, telephones, printers, scanners, and cash registers.

Managing multiple tasks with precision and accuracy.

Ability to:

Interact with the public in a professional, friendly, and helpful manner.

Understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.

Handle cash transactions accurately and securely.

Organize work to meet deadlines and maintain quality standards.

Learn and apply circulation policies, library classification systems, and library technology tools.

Work independently in a dynamic public environment.

Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Adapt to changing priorities, work schedules, and interruptions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and library patrons.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primarily performed in a climate-controlled environment.

Occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

Exposure to standard occupational office hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
